Diagnosis
Low water pressure in the Aquasana AQ-5200 is typically caused by one of two issues: an air lock within the filter housings or a "dry start" where the carbon blocks have not been fully saturated. When air becomes trapped in the top of the filter canisters, it creates a pocket of high pressure that resists the flow of water, effectively acting as a plug. This is most common during the initial installation if the water was turned on rapidly, forcing air into the system faster than it can be purged through the faucet. Additionally, the AQ-5200 utilizes dense carbon filtration media. If these cartridges are installed dry, the air trapped within the microscopic pores of the carbon block creates significant flow resistance. Until the media is completely saturated and the air is displaced, you will experience a weak trickle or "sputtering" flow. You can confirm this is the issue if the pressure is normal at other faucets in the house but restricted only at the filtered tap, and if you hear a hissing or "coughing" sound when the faucet is opened.
How to Fix It
To resolve the pressure drop and properly prime the system, follow these steps precisely:
- Turn the cold water supply valve to the "OFF" position.
- Open the filtered water faucet completely and leave it in the open position.
- Locate the blue bypass valve on the unit. Slowly rotate it to the open position. This allows a controlled mix of air and water to enter the system, preventing a sudden pressure spike that can crack the plastic housings.
- Allow the water to run for 3 to 5 minutes. You will see "milky" or cloudy water; this is normal and is simply millions of tiny air bubbles escaping the carbon media.
- If the flow remains a trickle, shut off the water supply and unscrew the filter canisters using the provided wrench.
- Remove the filter cartridges and submerge them in a clean basin or bucket of lukewarm water for 15 to 20 minutes. Gently shake them to release trapped air bubbles.
- Reinstall the saturated filters, ensuring the O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with a tiny amount of food-grade silicone grease if available.
- Tighten the canisters firmly but do not overtighten, as this can warp the housing and cause leaks.
- Slowly reopen the main water supply and let the system flush for another 2 gallons to clear any remaining carbon fines.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Kinked Tubing: Inspect the 1/4" plastic tubing running from the filter to the faucet. Because the AQ-5200 is installed under a sink, the tubing often gets pinched behind the garbage disposal or pushed against the back wall of the cabinet. Even a slight bend in the plastic line can reduce pressure by 50% or more.
- Verify the Diverter Valve: If you used the included T-adapter, ensure the valve is fully open. Sometimes the small handle on the T-adapter is only partially turned, restricting the volume of water entering the filter system before it even reaches the canisters.
- Inspect the Faucet Aerator: Unscrew the aerator from the tip of your filtered water faucet. Debris or carbon fines from the new filters can clog the small screen of the aerator during the first few minutes of use. Clean the screen with a toothbrush and reinstall.
- Test for Line Blockage: Disconnect the tubing from the input side of the filter and place it in a bucket. Turn on the water. If the flow is strong into the bucket but weak through the filter, the issue is definitely within the cartridges or a faulty internal seal.
Heads Up
- Never over-tighten the filter canisters; the plastic threads can strip, leading to permanent leaks that require a full housing replacement.
- Replace the filters every 6 to 12 months depending on your water usage. Clogged filters will cause the same low-pressure symptoms as an air lock.
- Always perform a "slow start" when turning the water back on after a filter change to avoid water hammer, which can damage the internal seals.
- If you live in an area with extremely high sediment, consider installing a 5-micron pre-filter before the AQ-5200 to prevent the carbon blocks from clogging prematurely.
