Diagnosis
The gurgling sound you experience upon initiating water flow in the Aquasana AQ-5200 is almost always caused by "air pockets" or trapped air within the filter canisters. Because this system uses a multi-stage filtration process with high-density carbon blocks and ion-exchange resins, air can become trapped in the voids between the media. When you open the faucet, the sudden pressure differential forces these air bubbles through the narrow tubing and filter media, creating a characteristic bubbling or gurgling noise as the air is displaced by incoming water. The humming sound is a different mechanical phenomenon. The AQ-5200 features an electronic shut-off valve and a monitoring system. A low-frequency hum typically indicates the solenoid valve is energizing to allow water flow or that the internal pressure regulator is vibrating against the mounting bracket. If the hum is rhythmic or high-pitched, it is often a sign of "water hammer" or air trapped specifically in the solenoid chamber, causing the diaphragm to vibrate rapidly as water rushes past it. You can confirm this by touching the tubing; if you feel a physical vibration coinciding with the sound, it is a mechanical resonance issue rather than an electrical failure.
How to Fix It
To eliminate air pockets and stabilize the solenoid vibration, perform a full system "burp" and pressure reset following these exact steps:
- Turn the filtered water faucet to the fully "Open" position.
- Locate the main cold water shut-off valve under the sink and close it completely.
- While the faucet is still open, slowly turn the main water supply back on. Do not blast it open; open it about 50% to allow air to escape gradually without creating violent turbulence.
- Let the water run continuously for 3 to 5 minutes. You will see "sputtering" at the faucet head; this is the trapped air exiting the system.
- Once the stream is solid and no longer spitting air, close the faucet.
- If the humming persists, check the mounting of the filter canisters. Ensure the brackets are tightened firmly against the cabinet wall using a 7/16" wrench. If the unit is loose, the solenoid's vibration will amplify through the cabinet wood, creating a louder hum.
- Verify that the power adapter is seated deeply into the AC outlet and the DC jack is pushed firmly into the control head. A loose 12V connection can cause the solenoid to "chatter," creating an electrical buzz.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect for Micro-Leaks: Check the O-rings on the filter cartridges. If an O-ring is pinched or dry, it can allow a tiny amount of air to be sucked into the line (venturi effect), causing a perpetual gurgle. Apply a small amount of food-grade silicone lubricant to the O-rings and reseat the filters.
- Adjust Water Pressure: If your home's static water pressure exceeds 80 PSI, the solenoid valve in the AQ-5200 may vibrate excessively. Install a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) on the main line to bring the pressure down to a stable 50-60 PSI.
- Replace the Solenoid Assembly: If the humming is a loud, metallic buzz that persists even after bleeding the air, the internal spring of the solenoid valve may have lost tension or become misaligned. This requires replacing the electronic valve assembly.
- Check Tubing Kinks: Examine the 1/4" LLDPE tubing for any sharp bends or kinks. A restricted flow path creates turbulence, which manifests as a humming or whistling sound when the valve opens. Straighten any bends using a heat gun on low setting or replace the section of tubing.

- Avoid using high-pressure "blow-out" compressors to clear lines, as this can rupture the internal membranes of the AQ-5200 filters.
- Always replace filters in the exact sequence specified; skipping a stage or installing them backward will cause severe air trapping and potential leaks.
- If you notice a sudden increase in humming accompanied by a drop in water pressure, it is a sign that the pre-filter is clogged and needs immediate replacement.
- Ensure the unit is installed vertically; tilting the canisters can create permanent air pockets that will never fully bleed out, leading to constant gurgling.
