Diagnosis
The "flat" or "metallic" taste experienced immediately after installing an Aquasana AQ-5200 filter is typically caused by a combination of carbon fines and dissolved air trapped within the filter media. The AQ-5200 utilizes a high-density activated carbon block; during shipping and handling, small particles of carbon (fines) break off and enter the water stream. While harmless, these fines can alter the taste and give the water a slightly gray or cloudy appearance. Furthermore, the "flat" sensation occurs because the filter is doing its job too efficiently at first. By stripping away the chlorine and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that your palate is accustomed to, the remaining natural minerals in your water are suddenly more prominent, which can be perceived as a lack of "crispness." If the taste is specifically bitter, it is likely that the filter cartridges were not seated deeply enough into the housing, allowing a small amount of unfiltered water to bypass the media and mix with the filtered water, creating a taste imbalance.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep saturation flush to stabilize the carbon bed and purge all trapped air. Follow these exact steps:
- Ensure the cold water supply valve is fully open and the filter head is securely locked.
- Open the dedicated filtered water faucet to the maximum flow rate. Do not use a half-turn; open it completely to create maximum pressure against the carbon block.
- Run the water continuously for 12 to 15 minutes. You may notice "sputtering" or "coughing" from the faucet; this is air escaping the filter housing. Continue running the water until the stream is perfectly steady and clear.
- While the water is running, gently shake the filter canisters slightly to help dislodge any remaining carbon fines trapped in the upper chambers.
- Close the faucet and let the system sit idle for 30 minutes. This allows the carbon media to fully hydrate and settle.
- Re-open the faucet and flush for an additional 2 minutes before tasting the water.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the O-rings on the filter cartridges. If an O-ring is pinched or missing, "bypass" occurs where raw tap water leaks around the filter instead of going through it. Remove the filters, inspect the rubber seals for tears, apply a tiny amount of food-grade silicone lubricant to the seals, and re-insert them until you feel a definitive "click" or seat.
- Verify the installation sequence. Ensure the filters are installed in the correct order as specified by the flow direction arrows on the canisters. Installing them backward can lead to improper filtration and a strange chemical taste.
- Test the source water. If your home has an extremely high concentration of iron or manganese, the new carbon filter can cause a temporary chemical reaction that tastes metallic. In this case, extend the flushing process to 30 minutes or consider adding a pre-filter sediment stage to protect the AQ-5200.
- Inspect the dedicated faucet tubing. If you used new plastic tubing for the installation, the "plastic" taste may be coming from the tubing itself rather than the filter. Flush the system for an additional 20 minutes to leach out any manufacturing residues from the polyethylene lines.
Heads Up
- Never use hot water in the AQ-5200 system. Ensure the filter is connected strictly to the cold water line; hot water can damage the carbon structure and release trapped contaminants back into your drinking water.
- Change your filters every 6 months or 600 gallons. Once the carbon pores are saturated, the filter can actually begin releasing trapped contaminants, leading to a sudden decline in taste.
- If you experience a significant drop in water pressure after a few months, it is likely sediment buildup. Check the inlet screen for debris and rinse it with a soft brush.
- Avoid using "quick-connect" fittings that are not rated for the specific tubing diameter (usually 1/4") used by Aquasana, as slow leaks can introduce bacteria into the filtered line.
