is the honeywell t9 compatible with my heat pump? i'm getting weird heating and cooling at the same time

— asked by Ben

Yes, it's compatible with most heat pumps. The weird operation is a wiring conflict.

For heat pump systems, verify there is NOT a wire attached to the 'W' terminal on the thermostat's wall plate. The 'W' terminal is for conventional auxiliary heat. On a standard heat pump setup, your heating wire should be at 'O/B' or 'Y', not 'W'.

Fix:

  1. Turn off power at the breaker.
  2. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.
  3. Inspect the wiring. If you see a wire in the 'W' terminal, disconnect it.
  4. Re-mount the thermostat and restore power.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The reverse issue can also happen. If you have a wire attached to 'W' on the wall plate, it can cause the auxiliary heat to run during a cooling call. Remove that wire.

HEADS UP: Incorrect heat pump wiring can damage the compressor. If you're unsure, reference the picture you took of your old thermostat's wiring or call 1-855-733-5465 for a pro.
