The loud grinding or clicking noise you are hearing during the ice-making cycle is a critical warning sign that the auger (the rotating screw that pushes ice out) is experiencing mechanical resistance. In the SenCre Nugget Ice Maker, the auger rotates against a chilled evaporator cylinder to shave ice into "nuggets." When a piece of ice freezes too solidly—often due to a slight dip in ambient room temperature or a mineral buildup on the cylinder—it creates a "hard freeze" that the motor cannot easily break through. The clicking sound is typically the internal overload protector or the motor's gear slipping as it attempts to overcome this resistance. The grinding sound occurs when the auger is forcing its way through an oversized ice chunk or when a foreign object (like a piece of plastic or a stray mineral deposit) has become lodged between the auger blade and the evaporator wall. If you continue to run the machine while it is making these noises, you risk burning out the drive motor or stripping the plastic gears, which will render the unit permanently inoperable.
How to Fix It
You should turn the unit off immediately to prevent permanent motor failure. Follow these steps to clear the jam and reset the mechanism:
- Power down the machine using the power button and physically unplug the unit from the wall outlet to ensure no electrical current is running to the auger motor.
- Remove the ice basket and any remaining ice from the reservoir to get a clear view of the evaporator cylinder (the metal drum).
- Inspect the cylinder for "ice bridges"—large, solid chunks of ice that have fused to the walls. If you see a solid block, do not use a knife or metal tool, as scratching the evaporator coating will cause future ice to stick even more.
- Use a plastic scoop or a warm, damp cloth to gently loosen the ice around the edges of the auger blades.
- If the auger is completely stuck, pour approximately 1 cup of lukewarm (not boiling) distilled water directly onto the evaporator cylinder. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to melt the internal bridge.
- Once the ice has softened, manually rotate the auger if possible, or simply wipe away the loosened debris.
- Dry the area around the rim, plug the unit back in, and initiate a "Clean" cycle to flush out any loosened mineral deposits that may have contributed to the friction.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale: If the grinding persists, it is likely caused by calcium buildup (limescale) on the evaporator wall, creating a rough surface that catches the auger. Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Pour it into the reservoir and run the "Clean" function twice. The acidity breaks down the mineral crust that causes the mechanical friction.
- Check the Ambient Temperature: If the machine is placed in a room colder than 60°F (15°C), the ice can freeze too hard for the motor to handle. Move the unit to a warmer location or ensure it is not placed directly under an AC vent, which causes the "hard freeze" clicking.
- Inspect the Auger Alignment: With the power off, check if the auger is wobbling. If the unit was bumped or tilted during movement, the auger may be slightly off-axis. Gently leveling the machine on a completely flat surface can sometimes resolve intermittent clicking.
- Reset the Control Board: Unplug the unit for at least 30 minutes. This allows the internal capacitors to discharge and resets the motor's timing logic, which can occasionally clear "ghost" errors causing the motor to stutter.

- Water Quality Matters: Always use filtered water. Hard water is the primary cause of the mineral buildup that leads to auger grinding and clicking.
- Avoid Metal Tools: Never use screwdrivers or metal picks to remove stuck ice. The evaporator cylinder is coated; once scratched, ice will bond to the metal, making the grinding noise a permanent occurrence.
- Regular Cleaning: Run the auto-cleaning cycle at least once every two weeks to prevent the "ice bridge" effect from occurring.
- Ventilation Space: Ensure there are at least 5 inches of clearance around the side vents. Overheating can cause the motor to struggle, leading to erratic clicking sounds.
