The loud grinding or rattling noise in the Kismile Nugget Ice Maker is almost always caused by a mechanical obstruction within the auger assembly. Unlike traditional cube makers, nugget ice machines use a rotating spiral screw (the auger) to crush the ice flakes as they are extruded from the freezing cylinder. When a "hard" piece of ice—usually a frozen chunk that didn't fully break down or a foreign object—gets lodged between the rotating auger and the outer wall of the chute, the motor continues to apply torque, resulting in a harsh metallic grinding sound. This typically happens if the machine has been left idle for too long, allowing ice to fuse into a solid mass, or if the water mineral content is high, creating "scale" deposits that act like sandpaper against the moving parts. You can confirm this is the issue if the noise occurs specifically during the "push" phase of the cycle (when ice is moving toward the basket) rather than during the cooling phase. If the noise is a constant hum, it's a compressor issue; if it's a rhythmic grinding, it's the auger.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding noise and clear the auger mechanism, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit immediately by pressing the Power button and then unplugging the machine from the wall outlet to prevent the motor from burning out.
- Remove the ice basket entirely and empty all existing ice into a sink.
- Using a high-lumen flashlight, look directly up into the ice discharge chute. Look for any jagged shards of ice or white mineral buildup clinging to the sides of the spiral screw.
- If you see a jam, do not use metal utensils, as scratching the interior coating can lead to faster ice buildup. Instead, use a plastic chopstick or long-reach plastic tweezers to gently nudge the obstruction away from the auger blade.
- If the ice is too frozen to move, pour approximately 1 cup of lukewarm (not boiling) distilled water slowly down the chute. Let it sit for 10 minutes to melt the "bridge" of ice causing the jam.
- Wipe the interior of the chute with a damp, lint-free microfiber cloth to remove any loose debris.
- Plug the machine back in and initiate the "Self-Cleaning" mode. This will run a full cycle of water through the system to flush out any remaining fragments that could cause a secondary jam.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Descale Treatment: If the grinding persists, you likely have calcium carbonate buildup on the auger. Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% warm water. Fill the reservoir to the "Max" line and run the self-cleaning cycle three times consecutively. The acidity breaks down the mineral scales that cause the rattling friction.
- Hard Reset: Unplug the unit for exactly 30 minutes. This allows the internal thermal fuse to reset and ensures any hidden ice bridges in the freezing cylinder have fully melted, preventing the motor from struggling against a frozen mass upon restart.
- Sump Filter Inspection: Check the water intake filter if your model has an external one. A restricted water flow can cause the machine to produce "dry" ice that is harder and more prone to jamming the auger, leading to the grinding sound. Replace the filter if it appears brown or cloudy.
- Air Bubble Purge: Sometimes air pockets in the pump cause a rattling sound that mimics grinding. Tilt the machine gently 15 degrees to the left and right while the pump is running to help air bubbles escape the internal plumbing.
