it's making a loud grinding or rattling noise when it's trying to drop ice into the basket.

DIAGNOSIS That's the sound of the plastic ejector blades trying to twist ice cubes that are stuck/fused to the freezing tray. It's not great for the motor.

FIX Unplug the machine immediately. Open the lid and look at the metal freezing tray. You'll likely see a sheet of ice or cubes that didn't drop. Use a plastic utensil (NOT metal) to gently break up and remove all ice. The most common cause is leaving ice in the basket too long, where meltwater drips back down and re-freezes everything together.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the noise persists even with a clean, empty tray, the gear mechanism that turns the blades might be jammed with mineral scale. You'll need to run a serious descaling cycle with a stronger vinegar solution or commercial descaler, letting it soak in the tray for an hour before running the clean cycle.

HEADS UP Get in the habit of emptying the ice basket into a storage bin in your freezer if you're not using it for a while. Letting ice sit in the machine's warm basket is the main cause of this jam.
