This creates a "channeling" effect where water flows through the gap between the plastic housing and the reservoir wall rather than being forced through the activated carbon and ion-exchange resin. You can confirm this is a sealing issue by performing a "drop test." Fill the reservoir to the max line and watch the water level. If the water level in the reservoir drops rapidly while the filtered water chamber fills slowly or not at all, the seal is compromised. Additionally, check for any hairline cracks in the plastic reservoir rim or debris (like calcium buildup) on the seating ledge, which prevents the filter from sitting perfectly flush. If you see water bubbling up around the edges of the cartridge during the pour, the vacuum seal has been broken.
How to Fix It
To resolve the leak and ensure a watertight seal, follow these precise steps to reset the cartridge seating:
- Remove the filter cartridge from the reservoir and rinse the seating area of the pitcher with a damp cloth to remove any sediment or mineral deposits that may be obstructing the rim.
- Inspect the black rubber O-ring at the top of the Longlast+ filter. Ensure it is seated flat against the plastic housing and is not twisted or protruding. If the ring looks dry, lightly dampen it with water to create a better glide.
- Insert the filter into the reservoir, ensuring it is centered perfectly.
- Apply firm, vertical downward pressure. You should feel a distinct "click" or a sudden drop in resistance as the filter locks into the seating groove. Do not rock the filter side-to-side; press straight down.
- Fill the reservoir slowly. If you see a leak, remove the filter and re-insert it, applying slightly more pressure to ensure the O-ring has fully compressed against the pitcher's plastic ledge.
- Run the first two full pitchers of water through the system and discard them to flush out carbon fines and ensure the seal remains intact under the weight of a full reservoir.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Reservoir Warping: If the pitcher was left in a hot dishwasher or exposed to direct sunlight, the plastic reservoir may have slightly warped. Inspect the rim for any bowing. - Clean Mineral Scaling: If you have hard water, calcium carbonate can build up on the seating ledge. Use a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water to scrub the reservoir rim. A layer of scale as thin as a piece of paper is enough to prevent the rubber O-ring from sealing.
