When the saw runs for a few seconds and then abruptly cuts power, you are experiencing a "Thermal or Load Trip." This happens when the current draw exceeds the safety threshold of the motor controller, triggering an immediate shutdown to protect the internal circuitry. This is rarely a battery failure, even if the battery indicates a full charge. Instead, it is usually caused by excessive mechanical resistance. This occurs when the chain cannot efficiently remove material, forcing the motor to work harder to maintain RPMs. Common culprits include a dull chain, a chain that is tensioned too tightly (creating friction in the guide bar), or "pinching" where the wood closes in on the bar, locking the chain in place. You can confirm this by running the saw without a load; if it runs indefinitely in the air but trips the moment it touches wood, the issue is mechanical resistance, not electrical failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve the overload tripping and restore consistent cutting power, follow these precise steps:
- Inspect Chain Sharpness: Examine the cutting teeth. If the top plate of the cutter is rounded or lacks a sharp "hook" edge, the saw will struggle to bite into the wood, increasing the load. Replace the chain or use a 5/32" round file to sharpen each tooth to the correct angle.
- Verify Chain Tension: Loosen the bar nuts. Pull the chain away from the bar; there should be a small gap, but the drive links should not be loose in the bar groove. Tighten the nuts and then adjust the tensioning screw until the chain snaps back firmly against the bar. Over-tightening the chain increases friction exponentially, which triggers the overload protector.
- Check Bar Lubrication: Ensure the oil reservoir is full and the oiler hole is not clogged with sawdust. If the chain is running dry, the friction creates heat and resistance that trips the electronics.
- Adjust Cutting Technique: When restarting, avoid "forcing" the saw into the wood. Let the chain reach full speed before entering the cut. If you feel the RPMs dropping, ease off the pressure. Let the teeth clear the chips naturally rather than leaning your body weight into the bar.
- Reset the System: After a trip, remove the battery for 30 seconds to clear the controller's temporary error state before re-inserting and attempting a cut.
If That Didn't Work
- Upgrade the Battery Capacity: While you may have a "full" battery, if you are using a standard M18 5.0Ah pack, the high current draw of the 2727-20 can cause voltage sag, which the saw interprets as a low-battery trip. Switch to a High Output 8.0Ah or 12.0Ah battery. These packs have lower internal resistance and can sustain the high amperage required for heavy cuts without tripping.
- Inspect the Drive Sprocket: Remove the side cover and check the drive sprocket for debris or wear. If sawdust has packed into the sprocket area or if the sprocket is notched, it can create erratic resistance that triggers the overload sensor. Clean the area thoroughly with compressed air.
- Check for Bar "Pinched" State: If the saw stops specifically during deep cuts, the wood is likely pinching the bar. Use a plastic felling wedge to keep the kerf open. This removes the lateral pressure on the bar, allowing the chain to spin freely.
- Test with a Different Chain Grade: If you are cutting frozen or extremely hard hardwoods, a standard chain may struggle. Switch to a professional-grade carbide-tipped chain which maintains an edge longer and reduces the load on the motor.

- Avoid "Boring" Cuts: Never use the tip of the bar to "bore" into a log; this creates maximum resistance and is the fastest way to trip the overload protection.
- Clean the Air Vents: Ensure the motor cooling vents are clear of sawdust. If the motor runs hot, the thermal trip will occur much sooner, even with a sharp chain.
- Tension Cold: Always tension your chain while it is cold. As the metal heats up during use, it expands; if you tension it while hot, it may become dangerously loose or, conversely, if you over-tighten it cold, it will bind as it warms up.
- Battery Heat: If the battery becomes too hot to touch, the internal BMS (Battery Management System) will cut power to protect the cells. Take a 10-minute break to let the pack cool down.
