Unlike the high-pressure fuel systems in gas saws, the M18 Fuel utilizes a relatively simple reservoir and pump mechanism. When the saw is stored on its side or tilted, oil can bypass the internal seals or seep through the oil discharge port located at the base of the bar mount. This occurs because the oil reservoir is designed to feed the pump via gravity and capillary action. If the unit is laid flat on its side, the oil level in the tank may sit above the seal of the oiler port, allowing the low-viscosity bar oil to slowly weep out of the system and accumulate on your garage floor. You can confirm this is the issue if you notice a puddle specifically beneath the bar mounting bolts or dripping from the nose of the 16-inch guide bar. If the leak is coming from the top of the tank, it is likely a faulty gasket or a loose cap, but "all over the place" leaks usually point to the discharge port.
How to Fix It
To stop the leaking and maintain the integrity of your oiling system, follow these precise storage and maintenance steps:
- Correct Storage Orientation: Never store the 2727-20 on its side. The only acceptable storage positions are upright (resting on the handle/base) or hanging by the designated carry loop. Ensure the oil tank cap is at the highest point of the tool.
- Check the Tank Cap Seal: Unscrew the oil reservoir cap and inspect the rubber O-ring. If the O-ring is pinched, dry, or cracked, oil will leak out of the top of the tank whenever the saw is tilted. Replace the O-ring if it doesn't create a vacuum seal when tightened.
- Clear the Oil Discharge Port: Use a can of compressed air or a thin wire to ensure no sawdust or wood chips are lodged in the oiler hole where the bar meets the chassis. Debris here can create a "wicking" effect that pulls oil out of the reservoir and onto the casing.
- Verify Oil Viscosity: Ensure you are using a high-quality, tacking bar and chain oil. Using thin automotive oil or low-grade lubricants reduces the surface tension, making the saw significantly more prone to leaking through the ports.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Oil Pump Assembly: If leaking persists even when stored upright, the internal oil pump seal may have failed. You will need to remove the side cover and inspect the pump housing for cracks. If the pump is leaking internally, the entire oiler assembly may need to be replaced to prevent the pump from running dry and burning out.
- Check for Bar Mounting Slack: Ensure the bar mounting nuts are torqued correctly. If the bar is loose, it can create a gap at the oiling port, allowing oil to spray or leak out of the sides rather than flowing directly into the bar groove.
