Diagnosis
The DeWalt DWPW2400 is designed with multiple layers of electrical protection to prevent motor burnout. When the unit is completely unresponsive—meaning the power switch provides no tactile "click" of engagement and the motor doesn't even hum—the issue is almost always a break in the electrical circuit before it reaches the motor windings. This is typically caused by a tripped Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) either at the wall outlet or within the unit's own plug assembly. Because this machine draws a significant amount of current (approximately 15 amps), using an underrated extension cord causes a voltage drop. This drop triggers the internal thermal overload protector or trips the GFCI safety mechanism to prevent the motor from overheating. If the unit was running for a while and then died, the thermal cutout has likely engaged to save the motor from permanent damage. To confirm, check if the GFCI reset button on the plug has popped out or if the wall outlet's "Reset" button is depressed.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps in exact order to isolate the power failure and restore operation:
- Unplug the DWPW2400 from the power source completely.
- Inspect the GFCI plug (the large block attached to the power cord). If the "Reset" button is protruding, press it firmly until it clicks into place. If it pops back out immediately, there is a short circuit in the unit.
- Bypass all extension cords and power strips. Plug the machine directly into a 120V, 60Hz grounded outlet. Ensure the outlet is a 20-amp circuit if possible.
- If using a GFCI wall outlet, press the "Reset" button on the outlet itself to ensure the circuit is live.
- Flip the rocker switch on the DWPW2400 to the 'I' (On) position.
- Squeeze the trigger on the spray gun. Note that some electric motors require the trigger to be pulled to "unload" the pressure before the motor will engage from a dead stop.
If That Didn't Work
- Wait for Thermal Reset: If the unit was used heavily before the failure, the internal thermal overload protector has tripped. This is a bi-metal strip that must cool down completely before it resets. Unplug the unit and wait exactly 30 to 60 minutes. Do not attempt to "jumpstart" it; simply let it sit in a shaded area.
- Test the Power Cord: Inspect the entire length of the power cable for nicks, flat spots, or melted insulation. Use a multimeter to check for continuity from the plug prongs to the internal switch terminals. If there is an open circuit (infinite ohms), the cord has a break and requires replacement.
- Inspect the Capacitor: If you hear a faint "click" but no motor movement, the start capacitor may have failed. This requires opening the motor housing to check for bulging or leaking fluid from the capacitor cylinder. A failed capacitor prevents the motor from generating the initial torque needed to spin.
- Check the Rocker Switch: The physical switch on the DWPW2400 can occasionally fail due to moisture ingress. With the unit unplugged, use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity when flipped to the 'I' position. If the switch doesn't close the circuit, the switch assembly needs to be replaced.

- Extension Cord Warning: Never use a standard household extension cord. Only use a 12-gauge (or thicker) heavy-duty outdoor rated cord. Using a 14 or 16-gauge cord will starve the motor of voltage and trip the GFCI repeatedly.
- Dry Run Prevention: Never run the motor without water flowing through the pump. Running the unit "dry" for even 60 seconds can overheat the pump head and trigger the thermal shutdown.
- Storage Tip: Always squeeze the trigger to release trapped pressure before unplugging the unit for the night. This prevents the internal seals from warping and reduces the load on the motor during the next startup.
- Water Intake: Ensure your garden hose is fully open. If the pump is cavitating (starving for water), it creates an immense load on the motor, which can trip the electrical breakers.
