DIAGNOSIS That crunching sound is almost always paper feeding incorrectly. It's trying to pull in more than one sheet at once, or a sheet is crooked and getting chewed up in the rollers.
FIX 1) Turn the printer OFF immediately to prevent more damage. 2) Open the rear access cover (the flap on the back). You'll likely see the crumpled paper. 3) Firmly but gently pull the paper straight OUT in the direction it was feeding. Don't yank it sideways. If it tears, make sure you get every last scrap out. 4) Open the front door and check the paper path from the front too. 5) Reload your paper in the tray, making sure the stack is neat, the guides are snug against the paper, and you're not overfilling it past the mark.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The sound might be coming from the print carriage itself if something is stuck in its track (see the "carriage jam" fix above). Check that path carefully.
HEADS UP Always fan a new stack of paper before loading it to separate any sheets that might be stuck together from humidity. This is the #1 cause of multi-feeds and jams.
