my makita drill won't drive screws all the way in, it just stops and spins. what am i doing wrong?

You're likely in drilling mode, not driving mode. This drill has an adjustable clutch ring. Here's how to set it for screwdriving.

1. Look at the numbered settings on the collar right behind the chuck.
2. Turn the adjusting ring so the arrow points to a higher number (like 10-15) for driving screws. The higher the number, the more torque before the clutch disengages.
3. For maximum torque, set the arrow to the drill bit symbol. Use this setting cautiously, as it will drive until the motor stalls or the screw strips.

If that didn't work, check your technique. Are you pressing straight? Is the driver bit stripped and spinning in the screw head? Use a fresh, sharp driver bit. Also, ensure you're using the correct speed: Low (1) speed range (0-500 RPM) provides more control and torque for driving.
