The flashing red LED on your Makita DTW1002Z is the tool's integrated electronic protection system triggering a "Fault State." This occurs when the tool's internal controller detects a condition that could lead to permanent hardware failure, such as a critical thermal overload, a voltage drop below the operational threshold, or a communication failure between the tool's brushless controller and the battery's protection circuit. In most cases, this is a "soft lock" caused by the tool overheating during high-torque applications (like breaking loose rusted lug nuts) or a momentary short-circuit caused by debris in the battery terminals. The tool enters this state to prevent the magnets in the brushless motor from demagnetizing or the MOSFETs on the circuit board from blowing. If the light flashes even with a fresh battery, the tool has likely detected an internal resistance issue or a "stuck" logic state in the controller.
How to Fix It
To clear the fault and reset the electronic controller, follow these precise steps:
- Remove the 18V LXT battery immediately. Do not attempt to pull the trigger while the battery is seated if the light is flashing.
- Inspect the battery terminals (the metal rails) inside the tool's battery slot. Use a can of compressed air or a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove any metallic dust or debris that could be causing a bridge between the positive and negative terminals.
- Perform a hard reset: Hold the trigger in the "ON" position for 10 full seconds while the battery is removed. This drains the residual capacitance from the internal capacitors on the control board.
- Retrieve a fully charged 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah LXT battery. Avoid using older, low-capacity 3.0Ah batteries for this test, as the DTW1002Z has high peak current draws that can trigger a voltage-drop fault on degraded cells.
- Slide the battery into the tool firmly until you hear a distinct click. Ensure there is no gap between the battery casing and the tool body.

If That Didn't Work

- Check for Mechanical Binding: Ensure the anvil (the square drive end) isn't seized. If the internal hammer mechanism is jammed due to ingress of grit or metal shavings, the motor will draw excessive current instantly upon trigger pull, triggering the red fault light. Try rotating the anvil manually to ensure it moves freely.
- Inspect for Moisture: If the tool was used in rain or a damp environment, moisture may be bridging connections on the trigger switch assembly. Use a heat gun on a low setting or a hairdryer to gently warm the housing for 5 minutes to evaporate internal condensation.
- Verify Battery Compatibility: Ensure you are not using a "clone" or third-party battery. The DTW1002Z uses a sophisticated communication protocol with the battery; non-genuine batteries often lack the correct resistance values, causing the tool to enter a fault state to protect the circuitry.
Heads Up
- Avoid "hammering" the trigger rapidly when trying to break a stubborn bolt; this creates massive current spikes that are more likely to trigger the red fault light than a steady, firm pull.
- If the tool flashes red during a long sequence of work, stop immediately and let it cool for 15 minutes. Forcing the tool to run while it is near its thermal limit can permanently damage the brushless motor windings.
- Keep the ventilation slots on the motor housing clear of grease and sawdust to ensure the internal fan can effectively cool the electronics.
- Always use a high-quality 1/2" impact socket. Using chrome (non-impact) sockets can cause the tool to vibrate excessively, which occasionally loosens internal wiring harnesses, leading to intermittent communication faults.
