The issue with your Makita DTW1002Z is a failure of the anvil's socket retention system. On this specific 1/2" square drive model, a small, spring-loaded steel detent ball is seated inside a cavity at the tip of the anvil. This ball is designed to snap into the internal groove of your impact sockets to prevent them from sliding off during positioning or reverse rotation. When sockets slip off effortlessly, it means the ball is no longer applying outward pressure against the socket wall.
This failure typically happens for one of three reasons. First, "impact grime"—a mixture of metallic shavings, grease, and road salt—has packed into the cavity, physically jamming the ball in the recessed position. Second, the internal coil spring has suffered fatigue or snapped, leaving the ball loose. Third, if you frequently use oversized or low-quality sockets, the ball may have worn down or the cavity has become wallowed out, reducing the tension required to hold the socket. You can confirm this by looking at the tip of the anvil; if you don't see a small, silver sphere protruding slightly from the square drive, the retention system is compromised.
How to Fix It
Before tearing the tool apart, attempt a chemical and mechanical purge of the detent mechanism. Many times, the spring is functional but the ball is glued in place by dried lubricant.
- Apply a generous amount of high-pressure brake cleaner or a dedicated electronic contact cleaner directly into the gap around the detent ball.

- Once the ball begins to move freely, spray a small amount of dry PTFE lubricant into the hole. Avoid heavy greases here, as they attract the grit that caused the problem.
- If the ball is moving but not "snapping" back out, the spring is likely dead. To replace the spring and ball without a full factory teardown, you must remove the anvil.
- Unscrew the outer housing bolts and carefully slide the hammer mechanism and anvil assembly out of the gear housing.
- Locate the anvil pin. Use a small punch to drive the detent ball and spring out of the rear of the anvil.
- Clear the bore with a cotton swab and replace the ball and spring with a genuine Makita replacement kit (ensure the spring tension matches the 18V LXT specifications).
- Reassemble the housing, ensuring the anvil is seated fully before tightening the casing bolts to avoid misalignment.
If That Didn't Work
If cleaning and spring replacement fail to restore the grip, consider these alternatives:
- Switch to Pin-Lock Sockets: If the anvil is physically worn down (the hole is too wide for the ball), the most reliable professional fix is to stop using friction-fit sockets and switch to impact sockets with O-rings and locking pins. You slide the pin through the anvil hole and secure it with a cotter pin, making it impossible for the socket to detach regardless of the detent ball's condition.
- Anvil Replacement: If the square drive itself is rounded or the detent cavity is gouged, the entire anvil assembly must be replaced. This is a modular part. Ensure you replace the associated bearings and seals during this process to prevent internal gear contamination.
- Socket Compatibility Check: Check your sockets for wear. If you are using "deep" sockets that have worn-down internal grooves, the detent ball may be working perfectly, but there is nothing for it to grip. Test the tool with a brand new, high-quality impact socket to rule out tool wear.

- Never use a file or sandpaper to "rough up" the anvil to create grip; this will permanently damage the tolerances and lead to socket wobble.
