my nest outdoor cam keeps going offline and coming back online every few minutes, it's driving me nuts

DIAGNOSIS You're dealing with a classic Wi-Fi signal dropout. The outdoor cam is more sensitive to weak signals than your phone or indoor devices because it's outside and has to maintain a constant video stream.

FIX First, you need to test the strength of your Wi-Fi at the camera's exact location. Unplug the camera and bring it inside, plugging it in temporarily right next to your router. If it stays solidly online there, you've confirmed it's a signal problem. For a permanent fix, you'll need to improve the signal. 1) Make sure the camera's power cable isn't coiled up tightly near the plug, as that can act as an antenna and interfere. 2) Consider a Wi-Fi extender or, better yet, a mesh network node placed closer to the camera's mounting spot.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the camera still drops even right next to the router, the problem might be with your ISP's modem or a setting called "band steering" on a dual-band router. Try temporarily disabling the 5GHz network on your router, forcing the camera to connect to the more stable 2.4GHz band, and see if that fixes the flakiness.

HEADS UP When you're checking the signal in the app, don't just glance at it. Watch it for a good 10 minutes. A weak signal might look "okay" for a moment, then plummet when your neighbor's baby monitor kicks on, causing the dropout cycle.
