Diagnosis
The DCF787C1 is a brushless tool, meaning it relies on a sophisticated electronic controller to bridge the gap between the battery and the motor. When a brand-new unit appears "dead" despite a fully charged battery, the root cause is typically a failure in the electrical circuit completion. This is most frequently caused by "contact gap" or "stiction" in the battery terminals. Because these tools are shipped in bulk, the spring-loaded contact pins inside the tool's battery port can occasionally become lodged in a compressed position or be obstructed by microscopic plastic shavings from the molding process.
Another common culprit is the battery's internal safety switch. DeWalt 20V Max batteries have a physical lockout mechanism to prevent short-circuiting during transport. If the battery isn't seated with a definitive "click" or if the locking tabs are slightly out of alignment, the tool will not receive power even if the battery seems physically inserted. You can confirm this is a connection issue if the LED light on the charger indicates a full charge, but the trigger on the tool provides no haptic response or sound whatsoever.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to establish a solid electrical connection and reset the tool's internal logic:
- Remove the battery from the DCF787C1 and set it aside.
- Inspect the battery port on the handle. Locate the two gold-plated spring-loaded pins at the top of the terminal block. Using a small plastic probe or a non-conductive pen, gently press these pins down and release them. They should snap back instantly. If one is stuck, wiggle it until it springs back to its original height.
- Inspect the battery's contact pads. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the copper terminals on the battery to remove any factory oxidation or shipping oils.
- Insert the battery and apply firm, downward pressure until you hear a loud, audible click from both the left and right locking tabs. If you only hear one click, the battery is not fully seated and the circuit is open.
- With the battery firmly seated, pull the trigger fully. If it still doesn't fire, remove the battery and hold the trigger down for 5 seconds to discharge any residual capacitance in the brushless controller, then re-insert the battery.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a different battery pack: If you have another 20V Max battery (even a smaller 2Ah pack), try it. Some high-capacity batteries have slightly thicker casings that can prevent the DCF787C1's locking mechanism from fully engaging, leaving the tool dead.
- Check the Forward/Reverse Switch: The DCF787C1 has a three-position slide switch (Forward, Reverse, and Center/Lock). If the switch is resting exactly in the center "Lock" position, the trigger is electronically disabled. Slide it firmly to the full left or full right position to ensure the contact is made.
- Inspect for Terminal Debris: Use a flashlight to look deep into the battery port. Occasionally, a small piece of cardboard or plastic packaging from the box can migrate into the port, preventing the battery from sliding in the final 2 millimeters required to touch the pins. Use compressed air to blow out the port.
- Verify Battery Charge State: Press the "Fuel Gauge" button on the battery. If it shows a full charge but the tool won't run, the battery may have entered a "sleep mode" due to over-discharge during shipping. Place it back on the charger for 10 minutes, even if it shows green, to "wake up" the internal BMS (Battery Management System).

- Never use conductive metal objects (like screwdrivers) to poke around inside the battery port while a battery is inserted, as this can blow the internal fuse of the brushless controller.
- Avoid using WD-40 or silicone sprays on the battery contacts; these create an insulating layer that can actually increase electrical resistance and cause the tool to stutter.
- Ensure you are using genuine DeWalt 20V Max batteries. Third-party "knock-off" batteries often have slightly different terminal heights that lead to intermittent power loss on the DCF787C1 model.
- Store your batteries in a climate-controlled environment. Extreme cold can cause the battery's internal chemistry to drop voltage below the tool's "low voltage cutoff" threshold, making the tool appear dead.
