While the ring shows the device is broadcasting its own temporary setup SSID, the failure to transition to a solid blue or white light means the authentication packet is being rejected or the device cannot "see" the gateway. This is most commonly caused by a frequency mismatch between the Echo Dot's wireless radio and the router's broadcast bands. Many modern routers use "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering," which merges 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into one name. The Echo Dot 5th Gen occasionally struggles to negotiate this hand-off during the initial pairing phase, leading to a timeout that manifests as a continuous spinning orange ring. Additionally, if you are using a WPA3 security protocol on your router, the Echo may fail to authenticate if it is expecting WPA2, causing the connection to loop indefinitely.
How to Fix It
To resolve this connection loop and successfully onboard your Echo Dot 5th Gen, follow these exact steps:
- Unplug the power adapter from the back of the Echo Dot and wait exactly 30 seconds to clear the local cache.
- Perform a hard reboot of your router by unplugging it from the wall for 60 seconds. This clears any IP address conflicts or "ghost" leases that might be blocking the new device.
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone. Go to Devices > Echo & Alexa. If you see a "ghost" version of the device that failed to connect, select it and choose Forget Device or Remove Device.
