When the device requires you to be inches away or yell, it indicates a failure in the "wake word" detection pipeline. This is rarely a total hardware failure of all eight microphones simultaneously; instead, it is typically a state of "partial deafness" caused by software-level gain suppression, a physical obstruction of the microphone ports, or a glitch in the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that handles noise cancellation. If the device is wall-mounted, the issue is often exacerbated by "acoustic shadowing." If the display is mounted too close to a textured wall or inside a recessed niche, the sound waves bounce off the wall surface before reaching the mics, creating destructive interference that cancels out your voice. To confirm if this is a hardware or software issue, attempt to trigger Alexa using the on-screen "Tap to Talk" button. If the device responds normally to touch but ignores voice, the issue is isolated to the microphone array or the ambient noise cancellation settings.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to calibrate the audio input and clear software blocks:
