my new et-4850 won't print over wifi at all, setup keeps failing. it's plugged in and on the same network as my laptop.

Diagnosis

The Epson EcoTank ET-4850 often fails initial wireless setup because of a "handshake" failure between the printer's network interface card (NIC) and the router, specifically when dealing with dual-band routers. Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals under the same SSID. The ET-4850 primarily relies on the 2.4GHz band for stability; if your laptop is connected to the 5GHz band, the printer may fail to "see" the laptop or the router during the handshake process, leading to a timeout or a "Connection Failed" error message on the LCD screen. Furthermore, the printer may have defaulted to "Wi-Fi Direct" mode. In this state, the printer acts as its own access point (creating a network named something like DIRECT-xxxx-ET4850). If your laptop connects to this direct signal instead of your home router, you will be able to print, but the printer will appear "Offline" as soon as you try to access the internet or move to another room. You can confirm this by checking your laptop's Wi-Fi list; if you see a network starting with "DIRECT-", the printer is not actually on your local network.

How to Fix It

To resolve this, you must force a clean association between the printer and the 2.4GHz band of your router using the onboard control panel.

1. Power off the printer completely and unplug the power cable for 30 seconds to clear the temporary network cache.
2. Plug the printer back in and wait for the home screen to load.
3. Press the Home button and use the arrow keys to navigate to Settings.

If That Didn't Work
