DIAGNOSIS This is normal operation but indicates poor heat dissipation. The RAX50 has a large internal heatsink and runs hot under load. Excessive heat can cause stability issues.
FIX Improve ventilation. Place the router upright on a hard, flat surface. Ensure at least 4 inches of open space on all sides, especially the top and rear vent slots. Do not place anything on top of it. Move it out of any enclosed entertainment center or shelf. Ambient room temperature directly affects router temperature.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check the router's internal temperature. Log into the web interface, go to Advanced > Administration > Router Status. Look for a temperature reading. Sustained operation above 70°C (158°F) is problematic. If it's consistently that high in a cool room, the internal fan may be faulty or clogged with dust.
HEADS UP Do not attempt to open the router casing to add cooling unless it is out of warranty. You will void the warranty and risk electrostatic damage. If overheating causes frequent reboots or WiFi dropouts, contact Netgear support while under warranty.
