Diagnosis
This error occurs when the printer's logic board cannot successfully handshake with the integrated circuit (IC) chip on the ink cartridge. Even if the cartridge is the correct model (e.g., Epson 212 or 212XL), the "Incorrect Cartridge" message is triggered by a failure in the electrical loop. This is most commonly caused by a microscopic layer of oxidation on the gold contact pads, a remnant of the yellow protective adhesive tape, or a slightly misaligned chip that isn't making full contact with the printer's spring-loaded pins. In some cases, the issue is a "chip mismatch" where the printer's firmware perceives the cartridge as being from a different region (e.g., a North American printer attempting to read a European cartridge). To confirm the cause, look closely at the gold chip on the cartridge; if you see any scratches, residue, or if the chip seems slightly recessed into the plastic housing, the printer will trigger this error as a safety mechanism to prevent ink leakage or hardware damage.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to reset the connection and clear the error:
- Power down the WF-2960 completely and unplug the power cable from the wall outlet to discharge any residual static electricity from the motherboard.
- Open the scanner unit to access the ink cartridge bay. Remove the problematic cartridge and set it on a clean, lint-free surface.
- Inspect the gold chip on the cartridge. Ensure the yellow plastic pull-tab has been completely removed. If any adhesive residue remains on the gold contacts, use a small amount of 90% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab to clean it.
- Inside the printer, locate the small gold pins that press against the cartridge chip. Use a dry, clean cotton swab to gently wipe these pins to remove any ink splatter or dust.
- Inspect the cartridge for any "bowing" or warping in the plastic. If the cartridge doesn't sit flush, it won't trigger the chip sensor.
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly. You should feel a distinct "click" as it locks into place. If it feels loose, push down slightly more firmly until it is seated deep in the carriage.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on. The printer will perform a self-test and should now recognize the chip.
If That Didn't Work
- Hard Reset the Ink Logic: With the printer on, remove all ink cartridges. Turn the printer off and unplug it for exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain the capacitors. Reinsert only the "incorrect" cartridge and power back on to see if the error clears.
- Cross-Check the Chip Alignment: Compare the gold chip of the problematic cartridge with one of the other working cartridges. If the chip on the new one is shifted even 1mm to the left or right, it will not align with the pins. You can sometimes gently nudge the chip into a more centered position if it is loose in its socket.
- Firmware Conflict: If you recently updated the printer's firmware, the printer may have flagged the specific batch of ink as "non-genuine" or "incompatible" due to a chip revision change. Try a different cartridge from a different retail batch to determine if the issue is with the specific ink unit or the printer's firmware.
- Clean the Carriage Path: Check the plastic rails where the ink carriage slides. If there is a buildup of grime or a small piece of debris, the carriage may not be seating the cartridge fully against the pins, causing an intermittent connection.
Heads Up
- Never use a pencil eraser or abrasive scrubbing pad on the gold chips, as this can scratch the conductive layer and permanently kill the cartridge.
- Avoid touching the gold contacts with your bare fingers; skin oils can create a thin insulating layer that leads to "Incorrect Cartridge" errors.
- Always ensure you are using the specific regional ink for your WF-2960; Epson chips are region-locked and will not work across different continents.
- If you are using third-party "compatible" cartridges, be aware that Epson frequently releases firmware updates specifically designed to block these chips.
