The sudden failure of the Ryobi P215K1 while the battery indicator still shows power is typically caused by the activation of the Electronic Protection System (EPS). This internal circuitry is designed to prevent the motor from burning out and the lithium-ion cells from permanent degradation. When you hit a particularly dense knot in wood or apply excessive torque to a stubborn screw, the current draw spikes beyond a safe threshold, triggering a "thermal trip" or an over-current shutdown. Even if the tool doesn't feel scorching to the touch, the internal MOSFETs or the motor windings can reach critical temperatures rapidly. The battery light remains on because the battery itself still has a voltage charge, but the tool has electronically severed the connection between the battery terminals and the motor to prevent a catastrophic failure. You can confirm this is the issue if the drill worked perfectly until a high-torque moment and now refuses to engage despite a full battery charge.
How to Fix It
To reset the electronic protection and restore functionality to your P215K1, follow these precise steps:
- Immediately remove the 18V ONE+ battery from the base of the drill. Do not leave it attached, as the battery will continue to draw a small amount of current to maintain the logic board, which slows the cooling process.
- Place the drill and the battery in a cool, shaded area. Avoid placing them on hot surfaces like a workbench in direct sunlight. Wait exactly 20 minutes; this allows the internal heat sinks and motor windings to drop below the trigger threshold.
- While waiting, inspect the chuck for any debris or jammed material that might be causing a mechanical lock, which would trigger the EPS immediately upon restart.
- Press the fuel gauge button on the battery. Ensure you have at least three green LEDs lit. If only one or two are lit, the voltage may be too low to overcome the initial startup torque, even if the battery isn't "dead."

- Clean the gold-plated battery terminals with a dry microfiber cloth every few months to ensure a low-resistance connection, which prevents unnecessary heat buildup at the contact points.
- When drilling large holes (over 1/2 inch), use a pilot hole first to reduce the torque load on the P215K1's gear train.
