my berkey lower chamber is getting a pink or slimy film on the inside walls, what is this and how do i clean and prevent it?

the water level in my berkey upper chamber isn't going down even after a day, seems completely clogged, what do i do?

Step 4: Immediately fill the upper chamber with water. This prevents air re-entering the core. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If you have very sediment-heavy source water, the filter's pores may be superficially blocked. Scrub the filter exteriors clean under running water with a non-metallic scrub pad. HEADS UP Do not attempt to force water through by pressurizing the chamber. This can damage the filter housing. Proper priming is a wet process.

black flecks or specks are coming out of my berkey spigot into my glass, what are they and how do i fix it?

my berkey royal's water tastes weird or like plastic after the first setup, is the water safe to drink?

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Wash all chambers (upper, lower, lid) thoroughly with mild soap and warm water, then rinse completely before reassembly. HEADS UP The initial flushing process is mandatory. Consuming water from the first cycle without discarding it will have the off-taste.

the wingnuts on top of my berkey keep coming loose after i tighten them, causing the upper chamber to wobble, how do i secure them?

FIX Correct assembly order, from the filter stem up, is: Step 1: Filter element. Step 2: Rubber washer. Step 3: Upper chamber hole. Step 4: Plastic washer. Step 5: Wing nut. Tighten the wing nut firmly by hand until the rubber washer compresses and seals. The upper chamber should be pinched securely between the rubber washer below and the plastic washer above. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check that the plastic washer is present. If missing, the metal wing nut will cut into the rubber washer and not hold tension. HEADS UP Do not use tools to overtighten the wing nuts. Hand-tight is sufficient. Overtightening can crack the chamber or strip the plastic threads on the filter stem.

white stuff is building up on the bottom of my black berkey filters, looks like scale or powder, what is it and do i need to clean it?

Step 3: For heavier buildup, soak filters in a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar for 15-20 minutes, then scrub. Step 4: Rinse thoroughly. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If scale is also forming inside the upper or lower chamber, clean the chambers with the same vinegar solution and a soft cloth. HEADS UP Do not use metal scouring pads or abrasive cleaners. They will damage the filter's outer shell. This scaling does not mean the filter is spent.

just primed my new black berkey filters but the water is barely dripping through, takes hours to get a gallon, is this normal?

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Verify you are using the correct number of filter washers. Each Black Berkey filter requires one rubber washer installed on the stem, between the filter and the chamber's nut. HEADS UP Do not let the filters dry out after priming before first use. This can re-create the airlock.

my berkey royal water filter is leaking from the bottom of the spigot where it screws into the lower chamber, how do i stop it?

DIAGNOSIS The leak is caused by an improper seal between the spigot assembly and the lower chamber's wall. The most common cause is a missing, damaged, or incorrectly installed black rubber washer. FIX Step 1: Empty the lower chamber. Step 2: Unscrew the spigot's plastic locking nut from the inside of the chamber. Step 3: Remove the spigot. Step 4: Inspect the black rubber washer on the spigot shaft. Step 5: Ensure the washer is seated in the groove and is not cracked or flattened. Step 6: Reinsert the spigot, hand-tighten the locking nut firmly from the inside. Do not overtighten. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The chamber's threading or the spigot shaft itself may be cracked. Inspect both for hairline fractures. A cracked lower chamber requires replacement. HEADS UP The locking nut must be tightened from inside the chamber. Tightening the decorative knob on the outside will not seal the leak.
