DIAGNOSIS Most smart home devices are 2.4GHz-only, and they're notoriously picky. The Velop's combined SSID (or even the split 2.4GHz network) can sometimes use security protocols (like WPA3) or settings that these cheap chips don't like. FIX In the Linksys app, go to Wi-Fi Settings. Ensure "Security Mode" is set to "WPA2/WPA3 Personal" or just "WPA2 Personal." Pure WPA3 will break many older devices. Also, temporarily turn OFF any "AP Isolation" or "Client Isolation" setting you might have enabled under Device Prioritization or Advanced settings. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK For really stubborn devices, create a dedicated 2.4GHz guest network (with WPA2) and connect the smart devices to that. The simpler, slower guest network often works where the main one fails. Keep the guest network always on. HEADS UP When adding a smart device, if the app asks for a password, some devices can't handle special characters. Use a password with only letters and numbers on your 2.4GHz network to rule that out.

can i use my old router as a switch with the velop? i need more ethernet ports

Connect a computer to it, access its admin page, and do three things: 1) Disable its DHCP server. 2) Give it a static LAN IP address in your Velop's range (e.g., if Velop is 192.168.1.1, set old router to 192.168.1.2). 3) Don't touch its WAN/Internet port. Now, connect one of the old router's LAN ports to a LAN port on your Velop node via an Ethernet cable. The old router's other LAN ports are now safe to use as a switch. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If things get messy, just buy a simple, cheap, unmanaged network switch. Plug it into a Velop LAN port, and it'll instantly give you 4-8 more ports with zero configuration. It's the foolproof way. HEADS UP Never connect the Velop's LAN port to the old router's WAN port. That creates a "double NAT" and will make some devices and games freak out.

one of my velop nodes just has a blinking white light forever, never turns blue

DIAGNOSIS The node is stuck in its boot sequence or is failing to find/join the existing mesh network. It's in limbo. FIX First, move this blinking node right next to the main node, plug it into power, and wait 5 minutes. If it turns blue, the original location was just out of reliable range. If it still blinks white, factory reset it. With it powered on, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds until the light flashes red, then release. Wait for it to reboot (light will pulse white, then solid white). Then use the app's "Add a Node" to adopt it fresh. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK There's a slim chance the firmware is corrupted. You'll need to reset the main node as well to force a fresh mesh creation. Reset the main node (10-second button hold), set up your network again from scratch in the app, then add the problematic node. HEADS UP A perpetually blinking white light almost never means dead hardware. It's almost always a software/connection state that needs a hard reset to clear.

It's choosing a "clean" but slower channel to avoid interference, or it's stuck on a congested channel. FIX Log into the web interface at linksyssmartwifi.com. Go to Wi-Fi Settings > Manual. Change the 5GHz Channel Width to "80MHz" (not 20/40/80 or 160MHz). Change the 5GHz Channel to a fixed number like 36, 40, 44, or 48 (the non-DFS channels). Apply settings. Retest speed. This forces it onto a standard, fast channel. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check for an active "Node Steering" or "Client Steering" feature in the app under Wi-Fi Settings. Sometimes these features, while meant to help, can throttle connections during handoffs. Try turning them off temporarily to test. HEADS UP The Velop, like all mesh systems, has inherent overhead. Don't expect to hit your full 1Gbps plan speed over wireless; 500-700Mbps on a close 5GHz connection is typical and good.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Your ISP might require specific MAC address cloning or DHCP settings. Skip the app setup for a moment. Connect a computer directly to the modem to confirm internet works, then connect that computer to the Velop's LAN port. Use a web browser to go to linksyssmartwifi.com to access the classic setup, which has more advanced options than the app. HEADS UP Never connect the Velop's WAN port to a wall jack or another router's LAN port expecting it to just work. It needs to talk directly to the modem.

It tries to steer devices to the "best" band, but some older devices don't handle the kicks well and just latch onto 2.4GHz. FIX Log into the Linksys app, go to Wi-Fi Settings, and turn OFF "Smart Connect." This will split your Wi-Fi into two separate networks: YourNetworkName_5GHz and YourNetworkName_2.4GHz. Manually connect your faster devices to the 5GHz SSID. Problem solved. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK There's a known firmware bug in some older Velop AX versions that can cause 5GHz instability. Go to the app's Firmware Update section under Router Settings and check for an update. If one's available, install it. The updates often include stability patches. The red light should pulse white, then turn solid blue. IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The node might be too far from its parent node or there's severe wireless interference. Move the red-light node much closer to the main node, ideally in the same room, and plug it in again. If it goes blue there, you've got a range or obstruction issue. HEADS UP A solid red light on a node that was previously working almost always means a temporary mesh hiccup, not hardware failure. The power cycle fix works about 80% of the time.
