Diagnosis
The HP Smart Tank 7602 often triggers a "Paper Jam" error (often accompanied by an E3 or E4 error code on the display) even when no full sheet of paper is visible. This is typically caused by a "ghost jam," where a microscopic scrap of paper, a torn corner from a previous jam, or a piece of adhesive label has lodged itself against one of the photo-interrupter sensors. These sensors are small plastic "fingers" that detect the presence of paper; if a tiny sliver of debris keeps the sensor depressed, the printer assumes a jam is occurring. Another common cause is the accumulation of paper dust or "lint" on the rubber pickup rollers. When the rollers lose their grip due to debris, the printer detects that the paper hasn't reached the sensor within the expected timeframe (a timing error), which the firmware interprets as a physical jam. You can confirm this by checking if the error persists immediately after a reboot or if it only triggers the moment the printer attempts to pull a sheet from the tray.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the sensor and reset the feed mechanism:
- Power down the printer and disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet to prevent electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Open the rear access door (the duplexer area). Use a high-lumen LED flashlight to inspect the rollers. Look specifically for small white fragments of paper tucked into the crevices of the rubber rollers.
- If you locate a scrap, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers to pull the debris out. Always pull in the direction of the paper path (towards the exit) to avoid tearing the fragment further.
- Open the printhead access door. Gently move the carriage from side to side to ensure it moves freely. Check the far right and left ends of the carriage path for any small scraps of paper that may have fallen into the chassis.
- Clean the pickup rollers. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water (do not use rubbing alcohol as it can dry out the rubber). Gently wipe the rubber rollers in the paper tray area, rotating them manually if possible, to remove paper dust and oils.
- Close all doors firmly. Reconnect the power cable and perform a "Hard Reset": while the printer is on, unplug the power cord from the back of the device, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF): Open the ADF cover on the top of the scanner. Sometimes a tiny piece of paper is stuck in the ADF rollers, which triggers a general jam error for the entire machine. Clean the small rubber pads inside the ADF with a damp cloth.
- Perform a Sensor Reset: With the printer powered on, remove the paper tray entirely. Try to initiate a print job. If the error changes from "Paper Jam" to "Out of Paper," the issue was a timing error related to the tray sensors, and simply reseating the tray often clears the logic loop.
- Inspect the Rear Output Slot: Check the area where the printed paper exits. A small piece of paper can sometimes get wedged between the output tray and the internal chassis, putting pressure on the exit sensor. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the exit path.
- Update Firmware: Connect the printer to your PC and use the HP Smart app to check for firmware updates. Some early versions of the 7602 series had over-sensitive sensor thresholds that were corrected in later software patches.

- Avoid using canned air directly into the ink tanks or the printhead area, as this can push dust into the ink delivery tubes.
- Never use metal objects like screwdrivers to pry paper out of the rollers; the rubber is soft and easily gouged, which will lead to permanent misfeeds.
- Only use paper that meets the weight specifications for the Smart Tank 7602; using overly thick cardstock or thin glossy photo paper can cause the rollers to slip, triggering false jam errors.
- Ensure the paper guides in the tray are snug but not tight. If the guides are too tight, the paper will bow, causing it to hit the sensors at an angle and trigger a jam alert.
