You can confirm this by inserting a known-good, new 1/4" hex bit; if the bit still feels "spongy" or falls out when you shake the tool, the problem is mechanical wear or debris within the chuck assembly rather than a damaged bit.
How to Fix It
To restore the grip of your chuck, follow these steps to clean and reset the locking mechanism.

- Lubricate: Apply a single drop of high-quality synthetic machine oil (like 3-in-1 or a lithium-based lubricant) to the collar. Slide the collar open and closed five times to distribute the oil evenly across the spring mechanism.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Bit Detents: Check the bits you are using. If the "notch" or groove on the hex shank is worn smooth or rounded off, the locking ball has nothing to grip. Try a brand new impact-rated bit from a different manufacturer to rule out accessory failure.
- Check for Collar Deformation: Inspect the outer sleeve of the chuck for any dents or bends. Even a slight deformation in the metal sleeve can prevent the internal spring from pushing the locking ball fully into the bit's notch. If the sleeve is dented, the chuck assembly must be replaced.
- Replace the Chuck Assembly: If cleaning and lubrication fail, the internal spring is likely snapped or the ball bearing is pitted. Since the DCD771C2 chuck is a modular component, you can replace the entire front chuck assembly. This involves removing the housing screws and swapping the gear-driven chuck unit.
- Verify Bit Compatibility: Ensure you are not attempting to use round-shank bits. The DCD771C2 quick-release only accepts 1/4" hex shanks. Round bits will slide in but will never lock, leading to the "loose" feeling you described.
