The Luma Comfort IM200SS utilizes a specialized freezing plate system where water is pumped over a chilled evaporator. When you see "slivers" or undersized cubes despite the machine functioning, the primary cause is typically a mismatch between the selected ice size setting and the actual water volume being dispensed into the mold. If the selector is set to "Small," the internal pump runs for a shorter duration, filling only the bottom portion of the cube mold, resulting in thin, fragile shards rather than full-bodied cubes. However, if the machine is set to "Large" but still producing slivers, the issue is likely a low water level in the reservoir or a partial blockage in the water pump intake. When the pump cannot pull a full volume of water into the mold within the allotted cycle time, the freezing process begins with an insufficient amount of liquid, leading to "incomplete" cubes. This is often exacerbated by mineral buildup (scale) in the internal tubing, which restricts flow and prevents the mold from filling to the brim before the freezing cycle locks the ice in place.
How to Fix It
To resolve the ice size issue and return to producing full, clear cubes, follow these precise steps:
- Power on the unit and wait for the initial startup sequence to complete.
- Locate the "Ice Size" button on the top-mounted electronic control panel.
- Press the button repeatedly, observing the LED indicator lights. You will see the light cycle through S (Small), M (Medium), and L (Large).
- Stop when the LED is firmly illuminated on the "L" setting. Note that this change will not affect the ice currently in the basket; it only applies to the next freezing cycle.
- Open the water reservoir lid and ensure the water level is filled to the "MAX" line. If the water is low, the pump may suck air, leading to inconsistent cube volume.
- Empty the ice basket completely to allow the machine to reset its sensor and begin a fresh "Large" cycle.
- Wait for 2-3 full cycles (approximately 30-60 minutes) to verify that the cubes are filling the mold cavity entirely.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Deep Descale: If the "Large" setting is active but cubes are still thin, calcium deposits are likely restricting water flow. Fill the reservoir with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and distilled water. Run the machine through two full ice-making cycles. Once finished, discard the vinegar-ice and run two cycles of plain distilled water to flush the system. This clears the internal pump and tubing of scale.
- Check the Water Intake Filter: Inspect the area where the reservoir meets the internal pump. If you see debris or slime buildup, use a soft pipe cleaner or a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to gently clear the intake port. A partial clog here reduces the flow rate, preventing the mold from filling completely.
- Verify Ambient Temperature: If the room is excessively hot (above 90°F), the machine may struggle to maintain the evaporator temperature, causing the water to freeze too slowly or unevenly. Move the IM200SS to a cooler location with at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for proper ventilation.
- Reset the Internal Logic: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet for exactly 10 minutes. This clears the control board's temporary memory and resets the pump timing sequences. Plug it back in and immediately select the "L" setting before starting the first cycle.

- Use Distilled Water: To prevent the "sliver" effect caused by mineral buildup, always use distilled or filtered water. Hard tap water creates scale that permanently narrows the internal water lines.
- Avoid Overfilling the Basket: When the ice basket is too full, the sensors may trigger an early harvest cycle, which can occasionally interfere with the timing of the next fill. Keep the basket below the "MAX" line.
- Weekly Cleaning: Run the "Clean" function once a week. This automated cycle flushes the internal components and ensures the pump maintains maximum pressure for full-sized cubes.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Placing the unit in direct sun increases the internal temperature of the chassis, which can lead to "hollow" or smaller cubes due to premature melting during the filling phase.
