Diagnosis
The base plate (shoe) of the Bosch GST18V-60CN is constructed from a high-strength die-cast aluminum alloy. When this component is bent—typically due to a hard drop on a concrete floor or an accidental impact with a heavy workpiece—it undergoes "plastic deformation." Unlike spring steel, die-cast aluminum does not have a memory; once it exceeds its yield point, the internal crystalline structure of the metal is permanently altered. Attempting to "bend it back" is not only ineffective but dangerous. Because aluminum is brittle compared to steel, applying opposing force often results in hairline fractures or a complete snap along the stress lines. Even if you manage to visually align the plate, the structural integrity is compromised, and the plate will likely flex during a cut, causing the blade to drift or the tool to chatter. You can confirm the damage by placing the saw on a certified machinist's square or a flat granite surface slab; any gap between the bottom of the shoe and the surface indicates a warped plane that cannot be reliably corrected.
How to Fix It
Do not attempt to straighten the base plate with pliers or a vice. The only professional solution to restore 90-degree accuracy is a full replacement of the base assembly.
- Power down the tool and remove the 18V battery pack to prevent accidental trigger activation during the repair.
- Locate the two hex screws at the front of the base plate and the single large mounting screw at the rear. Use a Torx T20 driver to ensure a snug fit and avoid stripping the screw heads.
- Unscrew the rear mounting bolt completely. If the bolt is seized due to sawdust buildup, apply a small drop of penetrating oil and wait five minutes before attempting to turn.
- Carefully slide the damaged base plate assembly (including the guide rod) away from the motor housing. Be mindful of the spring-loaded tensioners that may pop out.
- Order the official Bosch replacement part number 1619P00998 (Base Plate with Guide Rod). Ensure the part matches the GST18V-60CN model specifically, as base plates vary between the "Professional" and "Home" lines.
- Slide the new base assembly into the chassis, ensuring the guide rod is fully seated in the tool's glide track.
- Reinstall the rear screw first to align the plate, then tighten the two front screws. Tighten them in a crisscross pattern to ensure the plate sits perfectly flush against the housing.
- Test the squareness by clamping a scrap piece of 18mm plywood and performing a 90-degree plunge cut.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Guide Rod Alignment: If the new base is installed but cuts are still drifting, the internal guide rod housing in the main motor body may be bent. Inspect the slot where the rod enters the tool for any burrs or deformations. If the slot is warped, the tool cannot be repaired and requires a full chassis replacement.
- Inspect the Blade Holder: A bent base plate often accompanies a bent blade holder (chuck). Remove the blade and inspect the clamping mechanism. If the blade sits at an angle relative to the base plate even when tightened, the holder is skewed. You will need to replace the blade clamp assembly to regain square cuts.
- Verify Blade Quality: Ensure you are using a high-quality, straight blade. A cheap or warped blade will mimic the symptoms of a bent base plate. Swap to a known-straight Bosch T-shank blade to rule out blade deflection.
- Calibrate the Bevel Adjustment: Ensure the bevel lock is fully engaged. If the locking lever is worn or the internal detent is stripped, the base may be shifting slightly during the cut, giving the appearance of a bent shoe.

- Avoid using the "edge" of the base plate to hammer a workpiece into place; this is the most common cause of deformation in die-cast shoes.
- Periodically clean the guide rod with a dry cloth and a small amount of silicone lubricant to prevent the base from sticking, which can cause "juddering" and inaccurate cuts.
- Always check that the base plate is pressed firmly against the material before starting the motor; lifting the front of the saw during a cut puts immense leverage on the base and can lead to warping.
- If you frequently work on uneven surfaces, use a sacrificial piece of MDF as a sub-base to protect the aluminum shoe from direct impact.
