DIAGNOSIS This happens when the Ray is set to "Speech Enhancement" mode, which boosts vocals at the expense of all other sound, making music and movie scores sound awful. It's probably accidentally turned on via the app or your TV remote.
FIX Open the Sonos app on your phone. 1) Go to the "Settings" tab. 2) Select your Ray from the list of products. 3) Tap "Sound." 4) You'll see the "Speech Enhancement" toggle. Make sure it's switched OFF (grey). You should hear the difference immediately. While you're there, you can also adjust the "Bass" and "Treble" sliders to your liking.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Check your TV's audio output format. If your TV is set to output PCM stereo (which is fine), but is sending a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal that the Ray is downmixing poorly, it can also cause weird sound. In your TV's audio settings, try changing the "Digital Audio Format" (or similar) from "Auto" or "Bitstream" to "PCM" for a more consistent signal.
HEADS UP The Ray is a compact soundbar, so its physical bass is limited. For a lot more low-end, you'd need to add a Sonos Sub or Sub Mini. Tinkering with the bass slider in the app can help, but it's boosting what's already there from its small drivers.
