the wall control panel for my garage door opener is dead, no lights or anything

— asked by Sam

DIAGNOSIS Loss of power to the wall console, almost always due to a disconnected or damaged low-voltage wire running from the motor unit to the wall.

FIX Check the wiring connections at both ends.
1. At the motor unit, find the terminal block where the thin wires from the wall console connect (often labeled '1', '2', '3', etc.). Ensure the two wires from the wall unit are firmly seated under the screws marked for the console (commonly terminals 1 and 2).
2. Tighten the terminal screws.
3. At the wall console, remove the cover and check that the wires are securely attached to the backplate terminals.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The wire itself may be pinched, cut, or shorted. Visually trace the wire's path from the opener to the wall. Look for damage, especially where it might pass through a wall or near the door track. You may need to run a new 2-conductor bell wire.

HEADS UP The wall console runs on safe, low voltage from the opener. Never attempt to power it with household current. If the connections are good and the wire is intact, the console itself may have failed and needs replacement.
