Diagnosis
The leakage occurring at the base of the Igloo Premium Self-Cleaning Ice Maker, specifically when not originating from the visible reservoir, is typically caused by a failure in the internal water circulation loop or a breach in the chassis seal. Because this unit uses a pump to move water from the reservoir to the freezing evaporator plates, any hairline crack in the silicone tubing or a loose tension clamp will cause water to drip directly onto the internal motor housing and eventually seep out from the bottom seams of the plastic casing. Another common culprit is the rear drainage system. This model features a silicone drain plug located at the bottom rear to facilitate emptying the unit. If this plug has warped, shifted, or was not seated perfectly flush during the initial setup, water will bypass the seal and pool underneath the machine. In some cases, if the unit is not perfectly level, water can migrate toward the rear vents and leak out of the chassis rather than staying within the reservoir basin, creating the illusion of a mechanical leak.
How to Fix It
To resolve the leak, follow these precise steps to isolate and seal the breach:
- Power Down and Drain: Unplug the unit from the 120V outlet immediately. Remove the ice scoop and empty all ice from the basket. Locate the silicone drain plug on the lower rear exterior of the machine. Pull the plug out completely to drain any residual water from the internal sump.
- Inspect the Drain Plug: Examine the silicone plug for any tears, grit, or mineral buildup. Clean the plug and the receiving hole with a damp cloth. Reinsert the plug, pressing firmly until you feel it "snap" or seat completely flush against the chassis. If there is a gap of even 1mm, water will leak.
- Leveling Calibration: Place a spirit level on top of the unit. If the machine is tilted toward the rear or side, water can overflow the internal reservoir walls. Adjust the placement of the unit on your countertop until it is perfectly level.
- Internal Hose Inspection: If the leak persists, unplug the unit and carefully tilt it 45 degrees to the side. Look for water droplets clinging to the underside of the plastic housing. If you see water dripping from the center-bottom, a silicone hose has likely slipped off its nipple. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently slide the hose back onto the plastic fitting and secure it with a small plastic zip-tie if the original tension is lost.
- Dry and Test: Use a microfiber cloth to dry the entire base and the countertop. Fill the reservoir with 2 liters of distilled water and run one full cycle to monitor the exact point of exit.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Evaporator Plate Scaling: Heavy calcium buildup on the freezing pins can cause water to "bridge" and overflow the internal containment tray. Run a deep cleaning cycle using a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% warm water. Let the solution sit for 30 minutes before running a rinse cycle to clear any mineral blockages.
- Inspect the Reservoir Seal: While the leak appears to be at the bottom, water may be leaking from the top reservoir seal and trickling down the internal walls of the chassis. Check the gasket where the water tank meets the main body; if it is pinched or dirty, water will travel down the interior and exit at the base.
- Examine the Pump Gasket: If you hear a grinding noise accompanying the leak, the water pump gasket may have failed. This requires a partial teardown to replace the O-ring on the pump assembly. If the unit is under warranty, do not open the motor housing.
- Verify Vent Clearance: Ensure the unit is at least 6 inches away from the wall. If the vents are blocked, the unit can overheat, causing condensation to build up internally and drip from the base, mimicking a leak.

- Use Distilled Water: Always use distilled or filtered water. Tap water contains minerals that create "scale" inside the internal tubing, which can lead to clogs and pressure build-ups that cause hoses to pop off.
