Diagnosis
Faint or "ghostly" printing on a Brother HL-L2460DW, even with a fresh TN-760 or TN-730 cartridge, typically stems from one of two issues: a failure in the powder delivery system or a breakdown in the electrostatic charge. The most common culprit is the protective plastic shipping seal. If the long orange or green pull-tab is not completely extracted, the toner powder cannot flow from the hopper into the developer roller, leaving the page mostly blank or streaky. Beyond the shipping strip, faint printing is often caused by a contaminated Corona Wire. This thin wire is responsible for charging the drum; if it accumulates a buildup of toner dust or paper lint, the electrical charge is uneven, preventing the toner from adhering to the page. You can confirm this by printing a "Printer Settings" report from the onboard menu; if the text is consistently faint across the entire page regardless of the content, it is a hardware delivery issue. If the faintness appears in vertical streaks, it is likely a Corona Wire or Drum Unit (DR-2400) failure.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps in exact order to restore full print density:
- Open the front cover of the printer and firmly grasp the handle of the toner/drum assembly. Pull the entire unit out of the machine.
- Inspect the side of the toner cartridge for a plastic pull-tab (usually orange or green). Grasp the tab and pull it firmly and steadily in the direction of the arrow until the entire strip is removed from the cartridge body. If the strip snaps, use needle-nose pliers to pull the remaining plastic out of the slot.
- Locate the green slider tab on the Drum Unit (the larger piece the toner sits in). Slide this green tab from left to right and back again five times. This physically wipes the Corona Wire. Crucial: Always slide the tab back to the far-left "Home" position before removing the unit, or you will print a thick black vertical stripe on every page.
- Reinsert the assembly into the printer and snap the front cover shut.
- Perform a hardware reset of the toner density: Press the [OK] button, navigate to [Print Reports] > [Printer Settings], and print one page.
- If the print is still light, press the [Go] button three times rapidly to trigger the internal cleaning cycle, which clears residual dust from the fuser rollers.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Paper Settings: Access the printer settings via the LCD panel or the Brother iPrint&Scan software. If the paper type is set to "Thin" or "Recycled," the fuser temperature is lowered, which can result in faint prints. Change the paper type to "Plain Paper" or "Bond" to increase the heat and pressure applied to the toner.
- Replace the Drum Unit (DR-2400): Toner cartridges provide the "ink," but the drum unit provides the "image." If the drum is worn out (usually after 12,000 pages), it cannot hold an electrical charge, resulting in faint output regardless of how much toner is in the cartridge. Replace the drum and reset the drum counter via the menu.
- Inspect for "Eco-Mode": Check the printer settings for "Toner Save Mode." If this is enabled, the printer intentionally reduces the amount of toner applied to the page. Disable this feature in the Device Settings menu to return to standard density.
- Verify Toner Authenticity: If you are using a third-party "compatible" cartridge, the powder may have a different melting point than genuine Brother toner. Try a genuine Brother TN-760 cartridge to determine if the issue is a chemical mismatch with the fuser.
Heads Up
- Never touch the black roller on the drum unit with your fingers; skin oils cause permanent "voids" or white spots in your prints.
- Avoid using canned air to blow out the inside of the printer, as this can push toner powder into the optical sensors, causing "Toner Low" errors even when the cartridge is full.
- If you experience "fading" only at the bottom of the page, check the rear exit tray for paper obstructions that might be causing the page to slide prematurely.
- Always perform the green slider cleaning sequence every time you replace a toner cartridge to prevent buildup.
