The loud, rhythmic clicking sound emanating from your Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation is the physical engagement and disengagement of the internal relays. These relays act as electronic switches that close a circuit to send 24V AC power to your HVAC equipment. When you hear a click every few minutes without the system actually starting, it indicates a "power cycling" or "short-cycling" loop where the Nest attempts to trigger the heat or cool call, but the connection is interrupted or the system fails to ignite/engage, causing the Nest to reset the call. This most commonly happens due to a lack of a "C" (Common) wire. Without a dedicated return path for power, the Nest performs "power stealing" from the Rh or Rc wires. If your HVAC system has a sensitive control board or if the voltage drop is too significant, the thermostat cannot maintain enough power to keep the relay closed. The relay clicks shut to start the system, the voltage drops instantly, the relay pops open, and the cycle repeats every 3 to 5 minutes. You can confirm this by checking the "Power" readings in the Technical Info menu on the device; if the "Lin" or "Voc" values are fluctuating wildly or are below the recommended thresholds, power stealing is the culprit.
How to Fix It
To resolve the clicking and stabilize the power delivery to your Nest 3rd Gen, follow these steps to ensure a stable 24V circuit:
- Verify the Breaker Panel: Locate your electrical service panel and ensure the breakers labeled "Furnace," "Air Handler," or "AC" are fully engaged. Flip them OFF and then back ON to clear any tripped states.
- Check the Float Switch: Locate your AC indoor unit (evaporator coil). Find the condensate drain line. If you have a safety float switch (a small plastic cap with wires coming out of it), lift the cap. If there is standing water in the pipe, the switch has tripped, cutting the 24V R-wire to prevent flooding. Clear the clog using a wet/dry vac on the exterior drain line.
- Inspect the Furnace Door Switch: Ensure the blower door panel on your furnace is completely closed. Most units have a safety kill-switch; if the panel is loose by even a quarter-inch, the system will lose power, causing the Nest to click as it tries to restart.
- Install a Nest Power Connector or C-Wire: If you have no C-wire, the permanent fix is installing the Nest Power Connector (part number GA100) at the furnace control board. Connect the Connector's wires to the C and Rh/Rc terminals on the furnace board, then run the existing thermostat wires to the Connector's leads. This provides a constant 24V return path, eliminating the need for power stealing and stopping the relay clicking.
- Test the Wiring: Remove the Nest display from the base. Use a multimeter to test the voltage between the R wire and the C wire (if present). You should see a steady reading between 24V and 28V AC. If the voltage is dipping below 20V when the relay clicks, your transformer may be undersized or failing.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for a Blown Fuse: Open your HVAC air handler/furnace and look at the control board. There is typically a small automotive-style blade fuse (usually 3A or 5A, purple or amber). If the filament is broken, the Nest will click because it is trying to send power into a dead circuit. Replace the fuse and check for short circuits in the thermostat wiring.
- Perform a Factory Reset: Occasionally, a software glitch in the "Learning" algorithm causes rapid cycling. Go to Settings > Reset > All Settings. This clears the schedule and learning data, forcing the device to re-calibrate its power draw from the HVAC system.
- Swap the Rh and Rc Wires: If you have both an R-heating and R-cooling wire, ensure they are seated deeply in the terminals. A loose wire on the Rc terminal can cause the relay to "flutter" as it intermittently makes contact, creating a rapid clicking sound.
- Replace the Base Plate: If the clicking is accompanied by a "burning" smell or the device is hot to the touch, the internal relay on the base plate may have physically failed or shorted. Replace the base with a new 3rd Gen compatible backplate.

- Avoid "Jump Starting": Never apply 120V power to the Nest terminals; it is a 24V system. Doing so will instantly fry the logic board and void your warranty.
- C-Wire Importance: While Nest claims it works without a C-wire, in 30% of HVAC configurations (especially high-efficiency furnaces), a C-wire is mandatory to prevent the exact clicking/cycling issue described here.
- Air Filter Maintenance: A severely clogged air filter can cause the HVAC system to overheat and trip a high-limit switch. This cuts power to the thermostat, causing the Nest to click as it attempts to reboot the system. Change filters every 30-90 days.
- Firmware Updates: Ensure your Nest is connected to Wi-Fi. Google frequently releases updates that optimize how the thermostat manages power stealing to reduce relay wear.
