Diagnosis
A constant faint buzzing or humming from your Amazon Smart Thermostat is almost always caused by one of two things: the relay inside the thermostat vibrating when energizing your HVAC system, or a wiring compatibility issue that allows a small amount of electrical current to create an audible vibration. This is a known issue with the Amazon Smart Thermostat and many other smart thermostats that use a similar relay-based design.
To narrow down the cause, pay attention to when the buzzing happens:
- Buzzing only when the system is actively heating or cooling: This points to a relay vibration. The thermostat contains a small electromagnetic relay that physically clicks when it calls for heat or cooling. Some relays vibrate at the line frequency (60 Hz in North America), producing a faint hum. This is normal mechanical behavior, though louder relays indicate a component on the edge of its tolerance.
- Buzzing all the time, even when the system is idle: This usually indicates a C-wire (common wire) issue. If your thermostat doesn't have a dedicated C-wire and is using a power-stealing or power-extending setup, the small trickle current flowing through the relay to charge the thermostat's battery can cause a continuous low-frequency hum.
- Buzzing that comes and goes randomly: This can indicate a loose wire connection at the thermostat terminals. Loose wires create intermittent contact, which makes the relay chatter or buzz as the connection fluctuates.
- Buzzing from the wall behind the thermostat, not the thermostat itself: This points to the transformer in your HVAC system. The thermostat wire runs back to a 24V transformer, and transformers can hum when under load or when they're failing. Put your ear right up to the thermostat to confirm the sound source.
How to Fix It
Start with the simplest fix and work down:
- Check all wire connections. Turn off power to your HVAC system at the breaker. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate. Inspect each wire connection — they should be fully inserted into the terminal blocks with no exposed copper visible. If any wire is partially inserted, push it in firmly until it clicks. A loose R, W, Y, or G wire is the most common cause of buzzing that's fixable at the thermostat.
- Install a C-wire or C-wire adapter if you don't have one. The Amazon Smart Thermostat ships with a C-wire adapter (the small module that installs at your furnace control board). If you skipped this during installation or it wasn't connected, the thermostat is power-stealing from the R wire, which commonly causes relay buzz. Installing the included adapter gives the thermostat a proper dedicated power connection and eliminates the trickle current that causes humming. - Tighten the wall plate mounting. A loosely mounted wall plate can amplify thermostat vibrations. Remove the thermostat, tighten the wall plate screws, and make sure the plate sits flush against the wall with no wobble. If the drywall anchors are stripped, replace them with larger anchors or toggle bolts.
- Add vibration dampening. Place a small piece of adhesive foam tape (weather stripping works) between the wall plate and the wall. This absorbs the vibration before it transfers to the wall, which acts as a sounding board. A thin rubber washer behind each mounting screw also helps.
If That Didn't Work
If the buzzing persists after checking wires and installing the C-wire adapter:
- Check if your system has a power extender wire (PEK) from a previous thermostat. If you replaced an Ecobee or another smart thermostat that used a power extender kit, the PEK module may still be connected at the furnace. These modules can conflict with the Amazon thermostat's C-wire adapter. Remove the old PEK from the furnace control board and restore the original wiring before installing the Amazon C-wire adapter.
- Test with the system manually off. Go to the thermostat menu and turn the system mode to OFF (not just setting the temperature so it won't call). If the buzzing stops when the system is off, the relay is the source — it's vibrating under load but resting when no call is active. A small amount of relay hum under load is normal and not harmful.
- Check the HVAC transformer. The 24V transformer that powers your thermostat can develop a hum as it ages. The transformer is usually a small box mounted near the furnace control board or inside the air handler. If the hum is coming from the transformer rather than the thermostat, the transformer may need replacement. This is a $15 to $30 part but should be installed by an HVAC technician if you're not comfortable working with line voltage.
- Contact Amazon support for a replacement. Some Amazon Smart Thermostats have relays that buzz louder than others due to manufacturing variation. If your unit has a distinctly audible hum within a quiet room from several feet away, it may be outside normal tolerance. Amazon's support (accessible through the Alexa app or amazon.com) can arrange a replacement under the 1-year warranty.
Heads Up
- A faint hum is normal for relay-based thermostats. If you can only hear it in a completely silent room with your ear near the thermostat, it's within normal range. The relay is a physical switch — it makes some noise. Digital thermostats without relays are silent but more expensive.
- Don't ignore a loud or new buzzing. If the buzzing suddenly appeared or is loud enough to hear from across the room, something has changed — a wire has loosened, the relay is failing, or the transformer is degrading. Investigate before it becomes a system failure.
- The C-wire adapter is the single most important installation step. Many buzzing, battery drain, and connectivity issues with the Amazon Smart Thermostat trace back to skipping the C-wire adapter. If you didn't install it during setup, go back and do it now — it takes about 15 minutes and fixes the majority of ongoing issues.
- Smart thermostats need more power than traditional ones. A traditional thermostat is just a switch — it needs almost no power. Smart thermostats run a processor, Wi-Fi radio, and display. Without a C-wire providing steady 24V power, the thermostat resorts to power-stealing tricks that cause buzzing, short cycling, and erratic behavior. A proper C-wire connection solves all of these.
