Diagnosis
The most common reason an Amazon Smart Thermostat displays a black screen immediately after installation is a failure in the 24V AC power loop. Unlike older battery-operated thermostats, this device requires a constant power supply to maintain its Wi-Fi connection and backlit display. If the screen is completely dead, the device is not receiving voltage from the HVAC transformer, meaning the circuit between the "R" (power) wire and the "C" (common) wire is broken or non-existent. This typically happens because of one of three reasons: the C-wire was not connected at the furnace control board, the wire is physically severed behind the wall, or the HVAC system's fuse has blown during the installation process. You can confirm this by checking if the thermostat's faceplate is fully seated on the wall plate; if the pins aren't making a flush connection, the screen will remain dark even if the wiring is correct. If the faceplate is secure, the issue is almost certainly a lack of 24V power reaching the C-terminal.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to restore power to the device:
- Turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box to prevent shorting the control board.
- Remove the thermostat faceplate from the wall by pulling it straight off the mounting pins.
- Inspect the wiring: Ensure the red wire is firmly seated in the R terminal and a blue or black wire is firmly seated in the C terminal. Tug gently on each wire to ensure they are locked in; if a wire slips out of the spring clip, the device won't boot.
- Go to your furnace or air handler and open the main panel. Locate the control board where the thermostat wires connect.
- Verify that the wire connected to "C" at the thermostat is also connected to the C-terminal (Common) on the furnace board. Many installers leave the C-wire disconnected at the furnace end, which leaves the thermostat without a return path for electricity.
- If you do not have a C-wire, you must install the Power Extender Kit (PEK). Connect the PEK module to the furnace board's R, G, Y, and W terminals, then run the provided 4-wire harness to the thermostat.
- Restore power at the breaker. Wait 60 seconds for the device to initialize and the Amazon logo to appear on the screen.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the HVAC system fuse. Look at the control board inside your furnace for a small automotive-style blade fuse (usually 3A or 5A). If you accidentally touched the R-wire to a ground wire during installation, this fuse will blow instantly, cutting all power to the thermostat. Replace the fuse with an identical amperage rating.
- Test for voltage with a multimeter. Set your meter to AC Voltage (20V or 200V range). Place one probe in the R terminal and one in the C terminal. You should see a reading between 24V and 28V AC. If you see 0V, the problem is with the HVAC transformer or a broken wire in the wall.
- Verify the "R" jumper settings. Some older systems use a jumper wire between Rh and Rc. The Amazon Smart Thermostat handles power differently; ensure you aren't using an external jumper wire that might be causing a short circuit.
- Inspect the mounting pins. Check the back of the faceplate for any bent or recessed gold pins. If a pin is pushed in, it cannot contact the wall plate, resulting in a black screen despite correct wiring.

- Avoid using "Add-a-Wire" adapters from third-party brands; use only the official Amazon Power Extender Kit to avoid voltage drops that cause intermittent rebooting.
- Never touch the R-wire to the C-wire or any metal chassis while the power is on, as this will immediately blow the furnace fuse.
- Ensure your HVAC system is a 24V AC system. This thermostat is NOT compatible with high-voltage (120V or 240V) baseboard heaters or millivolt systems.
- If the screen flickers but doesn't stay on, it usually indicates a loose connection at the furnace board rather than a total power failure.
