Diagnosis
The presence of a faint gray "shading" or consistent vertical streaks on the Brother MFC-L2750DW is rarely a result of the toner powder itself, which is why replacing the TN760 or TN730 cartridge didn't solve the problem. This issue is almost always caused by a buildup of waste toner or dust on the corona wire, which is a thin charging wire located inside the drum unit (DR310). When this wire becomes contaminated, it cannot properly apply the electrostatic charge to the drum, causing toner to adhere to areas of the page where it should be blank. If the streaks are perfectly vertical and consistent from top to bottom, it is a corona wire failure. However, if the streaks are repetitive (appearing every 3-4 inches) or look like smudges, the issue is likely a physical defect or "pit" on the surface of the drum roller or a worn-out fuser assembly. You can confirm the corona wire is the culprit if the graying is uniform across the entire width of the page or concentrated in a specific vertical band.
How to Fix It
To resolve the corona wire contamination and clear the background graying, follow these precise steps:
- Open the front cover of the printer to access the internal components.
- Grasp the handle of the drum unit (the large assembly that holds the toner cartridge) and pull it straight out of the machine.
- If the toner cartridge is still seated inside the drum, press the green lock lever and lift the toner cartridge out to expose the drum surface.
- Locate the green plastic slider tab on the top of the drum unit. This tab is designed to glide across the internal corona wire.
- Slide the green tab from left to right and back again slowly. Repeat this motion 5 to 7 times. Ensure you are moving the tab across the full width of the unit.
- CRITICAL: Slide the green tab back to its original "home" position (marked by a small arrow or notch). If the tab is left in the middle of the track, it will create a massive black vertical stripe down every page you print.
- Reinsert the toner cartridge into the drum unit until it clicks, then slide the entire assembly back into the printer.
- Close the front cover and print a "Printer Settings" report from the machine menu to verify the background is now white.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Drum Unit (DR310): If cleaning the corona wire doesn't work, the drum's photosensitive coating has likely degraded or developed a scratch. Since the drum is a separate consumable from the toner, it must be replaced independently once it reaches the end of its 12,000-page lifecycle. Look for a "Replace Drum" message on the LCD screen.
- Clean the Fuser Rollers: If you see gray smudging at the very bottom or top of the page, the fuser (the heating element) may have toner buildup. Open the back cover and inspect the two heat rollers. Use a lint-free, dry cloth to gently wipe away any visible clumps of melted toner. Do not use chemical cleaners or metal scrapers on the rollers.
- Adjust Toner Density: If the graying is very subtle, you can adjust the print density. Navigate to Menu > General Setup > Print Quality > Density. Lowering the density by 1 or 2 notches can often mask minor drum wear.
- Check Paper Settings: Ensure the paper type in the settings matches the actual paper in the tray. Using "Plain Paper" settings for "Thick" or "Recycled" paper can cause improper fusing, leading to a gray, grainy appearance.
Heads Up
- Never touch the black roller on the DR310 drum unit with your fingers; skin oils can cause permanent spotting and "ghosting" on your prints.
- Avoid using canned air or vacuum cleaners inside the machine, as static electricity can damage the sensitive corona wire.
- Always ensure the green slider is locked in its home position; failing to do so is the #1 cause of "permanent" black lines on Brother laser printers.
- If you are using third-party "compatible" toner, be aware that low-quality powder can leak and coat the corona wire more quickly than genuine Brother supplies.
