Diagnosis
The blurriness or "hazy" appearance you are seeing on your SimpliSafe Outdoor Camera Pro is caused by internal condensation. This occurs when the hermetic seal of the camera housing is compromised, allowing humid air to enter the internal cavity. When the temperature drops—or during the transition from a cool night to a warm, sunny day—that moisture condenses into tiny droplets on the interior surface of the lens dome. Because these droplets are inside the weather-shielded housing, wiping the exterior of the camera does nothing to clear the image. You can confirm this is an internal issue by looking closely at the lens under a bright light; you will often see tiny "fog" droplets or a distinct water line clinging to the inside of the plastic dome. If the blurriness worsens during high-humidity days or immediately after a rainstorm, it confirms that the IP-rated seal has failed, allowing moisture to migrate into the optical path. This is typically caused by a hairline crack in the plastic casing or a degraded rubber gasket around the mounting bracket.
How to Fix It
Since the Outdoor Camera Pro is a sealed unit, there is no official "door" to open to dry it out. However, you can attempt a forced dehydration process to clear the haze:
- Power down the camera completely by removing the battery pack or disconnecting the power source to prevent short-circuiting during the drying process.
- Carefully detach the camera from its mounting bracket and bring it into a climate-controlled indoor environment with low humidity.
- Place the camera in a sealed airtight container (such as a Tupperware bin) along with 5-10 large silica gel desiccant packets. Do not use raw rice, as rice dust can enter the camera chassis and cause permanent mechanical failure.
- Leave the camera in the desiccant chamber for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours. This allows the silica to pull the moisture out through the microscopic gaps in the seal.
- After 72 hours, remove the camera and use a microfiber cloth to clean the exterior lens.
- Reinstall the camera on the mount, ensuring the mounting bracket is screwed in tightly and flush against the wall to prevent further water runoff from pooling at the seal point.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Physical Seal Damage: Inspect the rubber gasket where the camera meets the mount. If you see any cracks, dry rot, or pinched rubber, the seal is gone. You can apply a very thin bead of clear silicone sealant around the seam of the housing (avoiding the lens itself) to create a temporary waterproof barrier.
- Hard Reset and Firmware Sync: While unlikely to fix a physical blur, a glitchy image processing algorithm can sometimes mimic "haze" by over-exposing the image. Perform a full factory reset by holding the reset button for 10 seconds to ensure the image processing is calibrated correctly for the current lighting.
- Check for UV Degradation: If the camera has been in direct sunlight for over two years, the plastic dome may have "clouded" due to UV degradation. This is not condensation but a chemical change in the plastic. If the haze persists after the desiccant treatment, the lens cover has likely oxidized and requires a full unit replacement.
- Contact Support for RMA: Because the Outdoor Camera Pro is designed to be weather-resistant, internal fogging is generally considered a manufacturing defect. If the desiccant method fails, contact SimpliSafe for a replacement under warranty, as opening the casing yourself will void all future coverage.
Heads Up
- Never use rubbing alcohol or harsh chemical cleaners on the lens dome; these can strip the hydrophobic coating and make the camera more prone to water spotting.
- When mounting the camera, ensure it is tilted slightly downward. A level or upward-facing mount allows rain to pool on the lens, which increases the pressure on the seals and encourages leaks.
- Avoid installing the camera directly under a gutter or a leak-prone eave; constant dripping in one specific spot can erode the weather seal over time.
- Check your battery levels regularly; a dying battery can sometimes cause the internal heater/regulator to fail, making the camera more susceptible to temperature-induced condensation.
