When these components are placed in a dishwasher, they are exposed to two primary stressors: high-temperature water cycles and caustic detergent chemicals. The intense heat causes the plastic base to expand and contract at a different rate than the steel blade, which gradually compromises the seal between the two materials. Over time, this thermal stress leads to "micro-leaking," where liquids seep into the internal housing of the blade assembly. Once water enters the base, it can cause internal oxidation or trap food particles that rot inside the assembly, leading to a foul smell or a gritty texture during operation. Furthermore, the harsh detergents used in dishwashers strip the factory lubrication from the bearing, causing the blades to become noisy or seize up entirely, which can eventually burn out the motor of the power base.
How to Fix It
To maintain the integrity of your 11-piece set and ensure the longevity of your cross blades, you must use a manual cleaning method. Follow these exact steps to sanitize the blades without damaging the seals:
- Immediately after blending, fill the blender cup about halfway with warm water and a single drop of mild dish soap.
- Secure the cross blade assembly onto the cup and pulse the blender for 5 to 10 seconds. This uses the centrifugal force of the blades to scrub away food residue from the underside of the assembly where sponges cannot reach.
- Pour out the soapy water and rinse the blade assembly under a stream of lukewarm water. Avoid using boiling water, as this mimics the dishwasher's heat damage.
- Use a soft-bristle bottle brush or a sponge to gently scrub the edges of the blades. Never use steel wool or abrasive scouring pads, as these create microscopic scratches in the stainless steel that allow bacteria to grow.
