The "metal-on-metal" grinding noise in the NutriBullet Pro 900 is typically caused by one of two things: a failure in the blade assembly's internal bearing or a misalignment between the extractor blade and the motor base's drive gear. When you hear a high-pitched screech or a heavy grinding sound, it usually means the stainless steel blade shaft is no longer spinning smoothly within its housing, or the plastic gear on the motor base is slipping against the blade's drive gear. This often happens if the blender was run with too many frozen solids (like large chunks of un-cut ice) or if the blade assembly was cross-threaded when screwed onto the cup. If the blade isn't perfectly flush, it enters the motor base at a slight angle, causing the drive gear to shave off small pieces of plastic or metal. You can confirm this by removing the cup and inspecting the bottom of the blade assembly for silver metallic shavings or by spinning the blades by hand; if they feel "gritty" or don't spin freely for a full rotation, the bearing has collapsed.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate and resolve the mechanical friction:
- Immediate Power Down: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Do not simply turn it off via the switch, as the motor may still have residual kinetic energy.
- Blade Inspection: Unscrew the extractor blade assembly from the blending cup. Inspect the underside of the blade. Look for any debris, such as a stray piece of plastic from a frozen fruit bag or a hard seed, that may be wedged between the blade and the rubber gasket.
- Manual Rotation Test: Using a finger (carefully), flick the blades. They should spin smoothly with zero resistance. If you feel a "clicking" or a "grinding" sensation while spinning them manually, the internal bearing is shot and the blade assembly must be replaced.
- Reseating the Assembly: Thread the blade assembly back onto the cup. Ensure it is perfectly level. Tighten it by hand until it is snug. Over-tightening with tools can warp the plastic housing, leading to the very grinding noise you are experiencing.
- Base Alignment: Inspect the drive gear (the protruding plastic nub) on the motor base. If it looks flattened or worn down, clear any debris using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
- The "Air-Gap" Test: Place the cup on the base without any ingredients. Pulse for 1 second. If the noise persists without food, the issue is mechanical failure of the blade or motor, not an overloading issue.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Extractor Blade: If the manual rotation test felt gritty, the internal seal has failed, allowing liquid to enter the bearing. Purchase a genuine NutriBullet Pro 900 replacement blade assembly. Avoid generic third-party blades, as the gear pitch is often slightly off, which will cause the grinding noise to return within a week.
- Check for Motor Base Gear Wear: If the blade is new but the noise continues, the drive gear on the motor base may be stripped. This requires a full base replacement as the gear is integrated into the motor housing and cannot be swapped individually without voiding all safety certifications.
- Verify Cup Integrity: Inspect the rim of your blending cup. If the plastic threads are stripped or cracked, the cup will sit tilted on the base. This creates a diagonal angle that forces the metal gears to grind against each other. Switch to a different cup to see if the noise disappears.
- Reduce Load Density: If the noise only happens during heavy blends, you are likely experiencing "cavitation" where the blades are hitting a pocket of air and then slamming into frozen solids. Add more liquid to the mix to ensure the blades can spin without hitting a "wall" of ice.

- The Max Fill Line is Absolute: Never fill past the Max line. Overfilling forces the motor to work harder, increasing heat and friction on the drive gear, which leads to premature grinding.
- Avoid "Hard" Ingredients: Never attempt to blend cinnamon sticks, whole almonds, or large chunks of frozen ginger. These materials can chip the blade edge or force the shaft out of alignment.
- Hand Wash Only: Never put the blade assembly in the dishwasher. The high heat and harsh chemicals degrade the rubber seal, allowing water to leak into the bearings, which causes the metal-on-metal grinding sound.
- Pulse First: Always start with 3-5 short pulses to break up large chunks before switching to a continuous blend. This prevents the motor from "stalling" and grinding the gears.
