The Ring Indoor Cam Gen 2 is designed exclusively for climate-controlled environments. Unlike the Stick Up Cam or Spotlight Cam series, the Indoor Cam lacks an IP (Ingress Protection) rating. This means the chassis is not hermetically sealed against moisture, dust, or temperature fluctuations. Even if the camera is placed under an eave and never touched by direct rain, it is still exposed to ambient humidity and condensation. The primary failure point is the internal circuit board. When outdoor humidity rises, moisture penetrates the non-sealed vents of the housing, leading to microscopic corrosion on the solder joints. Furthermore, the device is not rated for temperature extremes; extreme cold can cause the internal capacitors to fail, while extreme heat can lead to thermal throttling or permanent sensor degradation. You can confirm this lack of protection by noticing the open gaps around the power port and the lack of rubberized gaskets that are present on Ring's outdoor-rated models.
How to Fix It
To ensure your security system remains operational and your warranty stays intact, you must transition from an indoor model to a weather-resistant outdoor model. Follow these steps to properly deploy a camera under an eave:
- Purchase a Ring Stick Up Cam (Plug-In) or a Ring Spotlight Cam. These models feature a weather-resistant shell designed to withstand rain, snow, and wind.
- Identify the mounting point under your eave. Ensure the mounting surface is flat and dry. If mounting to stucco or brick, use a 3/16" drill bit to create pilot holes for the mounting screws.
- Install the mounting bracket using the provided screws. For a Stick Up Cam, ensure the bracket is tightened securely to prevent vibration, which can trigger false motion alerts.
- Connect the power cable. If using a Plug-In model, run the cable through a hole drilled in the eave to the nearest interior outlet to avoid exposing the plug itself to the elements.
- Mount the camera head onto the bracket and use the Ring app to adjust the angle. Ensure the lens is tilted slightly downward to prevent "sun flare" or "IR glare" from reflecting off the eave surface during nighttime recording.
If That Didn't Work
If you are unable to change the hardware or are facing specific installation constraints, consider these alternatives:
- Install a weatherproof electrical box (junction box) specifically designed for cameras. By housing the power connection in a sealed box, you prevent moisture from traveling up the cable into the device, though this still does not protect the camera lens from humidity.
- Relocate the Indoor Cam to a window sill facing outward. This keeps the device in a climate-controlled environment while allowing you to monitor the outdoor area through the glass. Note that you must turn off the "Night Vision" (IR) settings in the app, as the infrared light will reflect off the window and blind the camera.
- Use a Ring Floodlight Cam if the eave area has existing high-voltage wiring. This eliminates the need for a plug-in transformer and provides the most robust protection against weather and intruders.
- If the area is a covered porch with very low humidity, you can use a third-party plastic electronics enclosure, but be aware that this often causes the camera to overheat due to restricted airflow.

- Warranty Voidance: Using an Indoor Cam outdoors voids the manufacturer's warranty immediately. Any one-year limited warranty will not cover "environmental damage" caused by humidity or corrosion.
- Spider Webs: Outdoor cameras, especially those with IR night vision, attract spiders. Regularly wipe the lens with a microfiber cloth to prevent webs from triggering motion alerts.
- Power Surge Protection: Always plug outdoor-facing cameras into a surge protector. Lightning strikes near your home can travel through the power lines and fry the camera's internal board.
- Temperature Limits: Be aware that even outdoor cameras have operating limits (typically -20°C to 50°C). In extreme climates, ensure the camera is shielded from direct midday sun to prevent overheating.
