The total absence of LED activity on a Ring Indoor Cam Gen 2 after being unplugged typically indicates a complete break in the electrical circuit. This is rarely a failure of the camera's internal motherboard and is almost always a failure of the power delivery chain. Because these cameras lack internal batteries, they rely on a constant 5V DC stream; if the voltage drops even slightly below the threshold, the device will not initiate the boot sequence, resulting in a "dead" appearance with no status lights.
The root cause is usually one of three things: a "blown" power adapter (the wall brick), a fractured internal wire within the micro-USB cable caused by tension during the move, or a loose micro-USB port on the camera chassis. To confirm, look at the LED ring around the lens. If there is no flashing white or blue light within 60 seconds of plugging it in, the device is not receiving current. If you are using a power strip or a USB hub, the surge protector may have tripped or the port may not be providing the required amperage to jumpstart the camera's capacitors.
How to Fix It
To restore power to the device, you must isolate the failure point by bypassing the original accessories. Follow these exact steps:
- Unplug the camera from the current power source and disconnect the micro-USB cable from the back of the camera.
- Locate a known-working USB power adapter. Ensure it is rated for at least 5V/2A (10 Watts). A standard iPhone or Samsung fast-charging brick is ideal. Avoid using low-power "cube" adapters from older electronics or the USB ports on a PC/laptop, as these often output only 0.5A, which is insufficient to boot the Gen 2 hardware.
- Use a different, high-quality micro-USB cable. Ensure the cable is not longer than 10 feet; excessively long cables cause voltage drop, which can prevent the camera from powering on.
- Plug the adapter directly into a known-working wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or extension cord for this test to eliminate them as variables.
- Insert the micro-USB cable firmly into the camera port. You should feel a distinct "click" when the cable seats fully.
- Wait 60 seconds. The LED ring should begin flashing white, indicating it is booting up and attempting to connect to your Wi-Fi.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Port Pins: Use a bright flashlight and a magnifying glass to look inside the camera's micro-USB port. Look for bent or recessed gold pins. If a pin is bent, you can very carefully attempt to realign it using a thin needle or a sewing pin, but apply minimal pressure to avoid snapping the contact.
- Clear Debris: Use a dry toothpick or a can of compressed air to clear out the port. Dust bunnies or lint often accumulate in the port, preventing the cable from seating deeply enough to make electrical contact.
- Perform a Hard Reset: While the camera is plugged into the new power source, press and hold the setup button on the back/bottom of the device for a full 20 seconds. This forces a hardware reboot and can sometimes "wake" a device that has entered a frozen state during a power surge.
- Check for Cable Tension: If the camera is mounted, ensure the cable isn't being pinched by a bracket or pulled tight against a wall. The micro-USB ports on the Gen 2 are prone to "port stretch," where the internal solder joints break if the cable is pulled at a sharp angle.

- Avoid Generic Cables: Cheap, unbranded micro-USB cables often have thinner gauge wiring that cannot handle the 2A current required for the Ring Indoor Cam, leading to intermittent power cycles or "ghost" offline status.
- Voltage Stability: If your home experiences frequent brownouts or surges, plug the camera into a small UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to prevent the capacitors from frying during power fluctuations.
- Port Care: When moving the camera, always unplug the cable from the wall first, then the camera. Pulling the cable out of the camera by the wire rather than the plastic housing will eventually ruin the port.
