Diagnosis
Attempting to wash furnace filters or paint brushes in your GE Profile dishwasher poses a serious risk of mechanical damage, chemical contamination, and permanent staining to the appliance's interior.
How to Fix It
If these items have been placed inside, remove them immediately before running any cycle. For proper cleaning:
- Furnace Filters: Replace disposable fiberglass or pleated filters. Permanent/washable furnace filters must be cleaned by hand according to the HVAC manufacturer's instructions, typically with a gentle hose rinse and mild detergent, then air-dried completely.
- Paint Brushes: Clean water-based (latex) paint brushes by hand with warm, soapy water immediately after use. For oil-based paints, use the appropriate solvent (like mineral spirits) in a well-ventilated area, followed by soap and water, never in the dishwasher.
If That Didn't Work
If residue from a previously washed prohibited item has already caused staining or clogged the filter, run an empty cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of vinegar placed on the top rack to help break down grease and paint particles. Manually check and clean the filter assembly and spray arm holes for any obstructions.
Heads Up
Dishwasher detergents and high heat are not formulated for materials like filter fibers or paint resins. This can melt adhesives, dislodge debris into the pump, and leave hazardous chemical residues that may contaminate your dishware during later cycles.
