The "Recovery in Progress" message indicates that the Smart Recovery algorithm is active. Unlike a standard thermostat that kicks in exactly at the scheduled time, the Ecobee calculates the delta between your current indoor temperature and your next scheduled setpoint. It then analyzes historical data—specifically how many degrees per hour your HVAC system can move the temperature—to determine exactly when to start heating or cooling so that the target temperature is reached precisely at the start of the schedule block. The issue occurs when the algorithm's "learning" period is skewed by unusual weather events, open windows, or a system that is underperforming. If the thermostat thinks your home takes four hours to warm up when it actually takes one, it will trigger the system far too early, leaving you in an overheated or overcooled environment long before your scheduled time. Conversely, if it underestimates the time required, you'll feel the discomfort because the system didn't start soon enough. You can confirm this is the cause if the thermostat displays "Recovery in Progress" while the current temperature is already very close to (or has surpassed) the target setpoint.
How to Fix It
To stop the thermostat from preemptively changing your home's temperature and stick strictly to your programmed schedule, follow these precise steps on the device interface:
- Tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines) on the home screen of the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced.
- Select Settings from the menu list.
- Navigate to Preferences.
- Scroll down through the list of preferences until you locate Smart Recovery.
- Tap the toggle switch to change the status from Enabled to Disabled.
- Press the Done button or tap the home screen to save the changes.
- Verify that the "Recovery in Progress" text has disappeared from the main dashboard.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for "Comfort Settings" Conflicts: If you have multiple comfort settings (e.g., Home, Away, Sleep) and a complex schedule, the thermostat may be triggering a recovery for a setting that is only 1 degree different from your current state. Review your Main Menu > Settings > Comfort Settings and ensure there isn't a narrow temperature gap causing frequent, unnecessary recoveries.
- Calibrate Temperature Sensors: If you are using remote sensors, the Ecobee might be averaging a "cold" room into the calculation, triggering a recovery even if the main hallway is warm. Go to Main Menu > Settings > Installation Settings > Thresholds and check your temperature calibration. If the device is reading 2-3 degrees off, use the Temperature Offset setting to align the sensor with a manual thermometer.
- Inspect HVAC Airflow: If the recovery is taking an abnormally long time (causing the "Recovery" message to stay up for hours), your system may be struggling. Check the air filter for clogs or inspect the outdoor condenser coils for debris. A restricted system slows the "degrees per hour" rate, which confuses the Smart Recovery logic.
- Perform a Hard Restart: Occasionally, the learning cache for Smart Recovery can become corrupted. Power down the HVAC system at the breaker for 30 seconds and restart. This forces the Ecobee to reboot its software and clear temporary logic loops that might be keeping the recovery mode active.

- Energy Efficiency: Disabling Smart Recovery may lead to a "cold start" feeling in the morning, as the system will only start heating exactly at your wake-up time rather than preparing the room in advance.
- C-Wire Stability: Ensure your C-wire is securely connected to the RCC terminal. Intermittent power fluctuations can cause the thermostat to reboot and "forget" its learned recovery rates, leading to erratic scheduling behavior.
- Seasonal Shifts: If you keep Smart Recovery on, be aware that it takes about 7-14 days of consistent scheduling for the algorithm to accurately map your home's thermal profile after a change in season.
