When a router uses a single SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, it attempts to push devices to the faster 5GHz band. Because the Ecobee Premium relies primarily on the 2.4GHz band for its longer range and penetration through walls, the router may intermittently "kick" the device or force a handoff that the thermostat cannot maintain, leading to a dropped connection every few hours. Furthermore, this issue is often exacerbated by signal interference or a "weak spot" in the 2.4GHz coverage at the specific mounting point of the thermostat. If the signal strength (RSSI) fluctuates near the threshold of -70 dBm, the device will drop the connection to prevent data corruption, triggering the need for a manual reconnect. You can confirm this by checking the device's connection status in the app; if it shows "Offline" while other devices in the same room are connected, the issue is likely band-steering or local interference rather than a total internet outage.
How to Fix It
To resolve the instability, you must isolate the 2.4GHz frequency and ensure a stable DHCP lease. Follow these precise steps:
- Isolate the Wi-Fi Bands: Log into your router's administrative console (usually via 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Locate the Wireless Settings. Disable "Smart Connect" or "Band Steering." Rename your 5GHz network to something different (e.g., "Home_WiFi_5G") while keeping the 2.4GHz network as "Home_WiFi."
- Clear the Thermostat Cache: On the Ecobee Premium screen, tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines) > Settings > Wi-Fi. Select your current network and choose "Forget this Network."
- Optimize Router Channel: In your router settings, change the 2.4GHz channel from "Auto" to a static channel—specifically 1, 6, or 11. These are the only non-overlapping channels and provide the most stable connection for IoT devices.
