DIAGNOSIS Something is obstructing the paper path or a foreign object is stuck in the print mechanism. A piece of torn paper, a paper clip, or a label is the usual culprit.
FIX Power off the printer completely and inspect the paper path.
1. Open the rear paper feed cover and the front output tray cover.
2. Remove all paper from the trays.
3. Use a flashlight to look inside for any debris, torn paper scraps, or labels. Shine light from the front and back.
4. If you see an object, use long-nose pliers or tweezers to gently pull it straight out in the direction of paper travel. Do not yank sideways.
5. Also check the small, clear plastic encoder strip inside (the thin vertical strip) and wipe it gently with a dry cotton swab if it's dirty.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The noise could be from a failing print head carrier motor or a gear issue. Manually move the print head carrier (the part that holds the ink cartridges) from side to side when the printer is off—it should move smoothly without catching. If it's stiff, the service is needed.
HEADS UP Never force anything or spray compressed air directly into the mechanism. This can blow debris further into sensitive parts. If you can't see or reach the obstruction, stop and call for service.
