Diagnosis

This issue, commonly known as "ghosting" or "repetitive defect," occurs when toner is not properly transferred or fused to the paper, leaving a residual image on a rotating component that then prints that same image again further down the page. In the Brother HL-L2350DW, this is almost always caused by a physical defect on the surface of the DR230 Drum Unit or a failure in the Fuser Unit's pressure rollers. To confirm the source, you must measure the distance between the repeated smudges using a ruler. If the ghost image repeats every 34mm to 94mm, the problem is likely the toner cartridge. If the repeat is significantly longer—typically around 75mm to 95mm—the culprit is the DR230 drum. If the repeat is very long (approx. 1.5 to 3 inches) and looks like a smeared version of the text, the fuser assembly is failing to melt the toner into the fibers of the paper, or the fuser roller has a piece of melted plastic or "pick-up" stuck to it.

How to Fix It

If the repeat interval points to the drum unit, follow these precision cleaning steps to remove the debris causing the smudge:

1. Power off the printer and open the front cover.
2. Press the green locking lever to release the toner/drum assembly and pull it out of the machine.
3. Push the toner cartridge down into the drum unit and pull the cartridge out, leaving only the DR230 drum unit in your hand.
4. Locate the green-colored photosensitive roller. Do not touch this roller with your bare fingers, as skin oils cause permanent spotting.
5. Using a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a high-grade cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol, gently wipe the specific spot on the green roller that corresponds to the smudge on your page.
6. Rotate the drum roller by turning the gear on the side of the unit. Rotate it slowly to ensure you have cleaned the entire circumference of the roller.
7. Reinsert the toner cartridge into the drum unit until it clicks, slide the assembly back into the printer, and close the cover.
8. Run a "Print Quality Check Sheet" from the system menu to verify the ghosting is gone.

If That Didn't Work

• Replace the DR230 Drum Unit: If cleaning the roller doesn't work, the drum surface may be physically pitted or scratched. This is a permanent hardware failure. Order a genuine Brother DR230 unit. Ensure you reset the drum counter via the printer menu (Menu -> General Setup -> Replace Drum -> Yes) after installation, or the printer will continue to alert you of "Toner Low" or "Drum End" errors.

• Paper Weight Limits: Ensure your paper is within the 60 to 105 g/m² range. Using paper that is too thick for the HL-L2350DW will cause the paper to slide over the fuser roller rather than being pressed into it, leading to ghosting.
