Diagnosis
The red overload indicator on your EU2200i means its internal AC circuit protector has tripped. This is a safety feature triggered by one of two primary issues: you have exceeded the generator's rated capacity of 2200 watts (surge) / 1800 watts (continuous), or there is a short circuit or severe fault in a connected appliance or extension cord. The engine continues running because the overload only shuts off the inverter's AC power output to protect its sensitive electronics.
How to Fix It
To restore power, follow these steps in order:
- Immediately turn off and disconnect every appliance and cord from the generator's AC outlets.
- On the control panel, locate the red AC circuit protector button (it likely popped out to the OFF position). Firmly press this button back in to the ON position to reset it.
- With all appliances still disconnected, verify the overload indicator is now off and that you have normal AC output, typically by plugging in a simple, known-good lamp to test.
- If power is restored, methodically reconnect your appliances one by one, starting with the highest-wattage item, to identify which one caused the overload. Ensure the combined running wattage stays under 1800 watts.
If That Didn't Work
If the overload indicator turns solid red again immediately after resetting with nothing plugged in, or if it blinks continuously, this indicates a potential internal fault within the generator's inverter unit. In this case, stop the engine. Do not attempt repeated resets. The generator requires professional diagnosis and repair by an authorized Honda generator dealer.
Heads Up
Motor-starting tools like air compressors or pumps can have a surge wattage 3-4 times their running wattage. Always check both surge and running wattages on appliance labels. Also, inspect all extension cords and appliance plugs for damage, as a frayed cord causing a short is a common culprit for a nuisance overload trip.
