Diagnosis
The blinking battery icon on your Jackery Explorer 1000 indicates that the unit has entered "Deep Discharge Protection" or "Low Voltage Cutoff" mode. This occurs when the internal lithium-ion cells drop below a critical voltage threshold—typically below 3.0V per cell—causing the Battery Management System (BMS) to disable the main power circuitry to prevent permanent chemical damage to the cells. This state is most common when the unit is stored for several months without a maintenance charge. Because all electronics have a small "parasitic draw" (even when off), the battery slowly drains. Once the BMS detects the voltage is too low to safely power the inverter or the LCD screen, it locks the device. The blinking icon is a signal that the BMS is in a "wake-up" state, waiting for a stable external voltage source to trigger a slow recovery charge before it allows the main system to boot.
How to Fix It
To recover the unit, you must perform a controlled "wake-up" charge. Do not attempt to use the DC inputs or solar ports initially, as the BMS often requires the specific voltage profile of the AC wall adapter to reset the protection circuit.
- Locate the original Jackery AC power adapter (the brick). Ensure the cable is firmly seated in the input port of the Explorer 1000.
- Plug the adapter into a known-working 110V-120V wall outlet. Avoid using power strips or surge protectors for this recovery process to ensure maximum current stability.
- Press the main power button once. If the screen remains dark or continues to blink, do not repeatedly mash the button; this can sometimes trigger a secondary safety lockout.
- Leave the unit plugged in for a minimum of 6 to 12 hours. In deep discharge states, the BMS will initially apply a very low "trickle" current to stabilize the cells before switching to the standard fast-charge rate.
- Observe the display. Once the voltage reaches a safe threshold, the blinking icon will be replaced by a percentage (e.g., 1% or 2%) and the charging animation.
- Once the screen is active, allow the unit to reach 100% before attempting to plug in any AC appliances or USB devices.
If That Didn't Work
- Test the AC Adapter: Use a digital multimeter to check the output of the AC brick. It should read approximately 12.6V to 19V depending on the specific revision of the Explorer 1000. If the multimeter shows 0V or fluctuating voltage, the adapter has failed and must be replaced.
- Solar Jumpstart: If the AC port is unresponsive, try connecting a high-wattage solar panel (100W+) during peak sunlight. Connect the panel to the DC input using the 8mm DC connector. Sometimes the direct DC current from a panel can bypass a glitchy AC charging circuit and trigger the BMS wake-up.
- Hard Reset: While the unit is plugged into AC power, hold the power button down for a full 30 seconds. This can occasionally force a reboot of the internal controller if the software has frozen in the protection state.
- Check for Port Debris: Inspect the AC input port for bent pins or dust buildup. Use a can of compressed air to clear the port, as a poor connection can prevent the BMS from detecting the charger, keeping the unit in the blinking protection mode.
Heads Up
- The 80% Rule: To prevent this from happening again, never store your Jackery at 0% or 100%. For long-term storage, keep the battery between 60% and 80%.
- Quarterly Maintenance: Set a calendar reminder to charge the unit to 100% every 3 months. This compensates for natural self-discharge and prevents the BMS from triggering the low-voltage lockout.
- Temperature Warning: Do not attempt to charge the unit if it is below 32°F (0°C). Charging lithium batteries in freezing temperatures can cause permanent plating on the anode and may permanently disable the BMS.
- Avoid Heavy Loads During Recovery: Never plug a device into the AC outlets while the unit is recovering from a deep discharge. This diverts current away from the cells and can cause the recovery process to fail.
