The brown buildup you see in the brew head (the shower head) of the Cuisinart DGB-900BC is a combination of oxidized coffee oils and calcium carbonate deposits, commonly known as limescale. Because the DGB-900BC uses a high-pressure delivery system to push water through the grind, small particles of coffee dust and oils are forced upward and cling to the spray holes. Over time, these oils go rancid and create a sticky, brown film that traps mineral deposits from your tap water. This buildup doesn't just look gross; it creates "dead zones" in the brew cycle. When the holes in the shower head are partially blocked, the water cannot distribute evenly across the coffee grounds, leading to "channeling." This results in a brew that tastes both sour (under-extracted) and bitter (over-extracted) because some grounds are drenched while others remain dry. You can confirm this by running a brew cycle without coffee; if the water streams are uneven or spraying sideways instead of falling straight down, the shower head is obstructed.
How to Fix It
To thoroughly clean the brew head without dismantling the entire chassis, you need to perform a targeted chemical soak and a mechanical scrub.
- Unplug the machine and ensure it has cooled for at least 30 minutes to avoid steam burns. Remove the gold-tone filter and the coffee basket entirely.
- Prepare a cleaning solution using 1 part distilled white vinegar and 1 part warm water. Pour this into a small, deep bowl or a wide-mouth measuring cup.
- Since the shower head is fixed to the machine, you cannot remove it. Instead, place the bowl directly underneath the brew head. Fill the bowl high enough so that the metal spray plate is completely submerged in the liquid.
- If the bowl doesn't fit snugly, use a damp microfiber cloth soaked in the vinegar solution and press it firmly against the shower head, holding it there for 10 minutes to soften the oils.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a dedicated detailing brush. Dip it in the vinegar solution and scrub the holes of the shower head in a circular motion. Apply firm pressure to dislodge the brown "flakes" of buildup.
- Take a thin sewing needle or a paperclip and gently poke through each individual hole in the spray plate to ensure no mineral deposits are blocking the water flow.
- Fill the water reservoir to the maximum line with a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Run a full brew cycle without coffee.
- Once the cycle finishes, run two more full cycles with plain, filtered water to eliminate any lingering vinegar scent.
If That Didn't Work
- Commercial Descaling Solution: If white vinegar fails, the buildup may be heavy calcium scale. Purchase a citric-acid-based descaling powder (like Dezcal). Mix the powder with warm water and repeat the soaking and brewing process. Citric acid is significantly more aggressive against mineral buildup than acetic acid (vinegar).
- Deep Steam Flush: If the brown residue is stubborn, fill the reservoir with water and a tablespoon of baking soda. Run the brew cycle. The alkalinity of the baking soda helps break down the acidic coffee oils that vinegar sometimes misses.
- Mechanical Shower Head Removal: If the buildup is inside the tube itself and not just the plate, you may need to remove the top housing screws. Be careful: this involves disconnecting the heating element wires. Once open, you can remove the shower head assembly and soak it in a bowl of warm soapy water for 24 hours.
- Pressure Cleaning: Use a handheld steam cleaner (if available) to blast the holes of the shower head. The high-temperature pressurized steam can force out debris that a toothbrush cannot reach.

- Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool or scouring pads on the shower head; scratching the metal can create microscopic grooves where coffee oils will accumulate even faster in the future.
- Filter Your Water: To prevent future brown buildup, use a filtered water pitcher (like Brita) to fill your reservoir. Reducing the mineral content prevents the "glue" that holds coffee oils to the metal.
- Weekly Rinse: Every 7 days, run a "water-only" brew cycle to flush out residual oils before they oxidize and turn brown.
- Avoid Dishwasher: Do not put the brew head assembly (if removed) or the gold-tone filter in the dishwasher; the harsh detergents can strip the protective coatings and degrade the gold-tone mesh.
